#LibreUX case study - Tor moving from designing based on feedback of highly technical users to interviewing, training and running usability tests with Global South social movements.

This "Every proof assistant" lecture series sounds interesting. I only ever heard of Agda and Coq before, and recently learned there's an Isabelle, but this series has like a dozen listed.

First out is Arend, then MMT, more to come:

Very laudable project, esp. when I think of the so-called "supply chain attacks" I've been reading more about in the past year or so.

@micrackbiron I don't. Just bein' silly. Having experienced a couple trippy and quite terrifying sleep paralysis episodes, I would guess the same as you. @polychrome

@jointwhisper I feel like Dr. Strangelove at the end was a little over-the-top.

The reason these fake pictures "work" is because people are anxious and ready to believe the worst about the other. So it's the other side of partisan divide in the US*, or it's gay people, or it's somebody you might already feel prejudice against.

The most effective trolling doesn't fight with you. It agrees with you.

Users vs programmers

@wolf480pl @tsturm @freakazoid that's not really the point I'm trying to make. It's more about the level of effort and energy people are willing to put in to make an interface that fits their needs more closely. For something nontrivial, making a good program usu isn't cheap.
I do think there's scope for exposing more access to the guts of the system (libre SW/HW FTW). It's also worth appreciating the "users"/"programmers" split is fluid even for one person. It's still a useful split for short-handing the level of effort and sophistication expected of the operator of the system

Users vs programmers

@jfred @tsturm @freakazoid I intentionally didn't write "GUI". Just using a CLI isn't programming in the sense I meant or in the sense I would guess most people mean. There's a minimum amount of composition or customization I would expect before I call it "programming".

Users vs programmers

@tsturm @freakazoid it really looks like most people didn't want to write programs to get their work done. Even I, a software engineer, would prefer a good UI for most of my computer usage. I like a good API too, but often I need it just to resolve shortcomings in the primary interface.

I learned about secureboot mostly from this blog:

This is the guy behind sbsigntools and efitools (including PreLoader.efi and HashTool.efi).

I'm really glad that someone with this approach was there, figuring out how this stuff works, explaining it, and educating people that it's not necessarily evil.

@grainloom No one is perfect... that's why pencils have erasers 💫 💩
