All cryptography is public-key cryptography if you did it wrong enough.

> In the early days, a number of terms for the practitioners in computing were suggested in the Communications of the ACM: turingineer, turologist, flow-charts-man, applied meta-mathematician, and applied epistemologist, comptologist, hypologist, computics has also been suggested.

"Turingineers" sound much cooler than software engineers. "Our comptologists are busy turingineering a new software package for that..." Too bad it didn't become a thing (but that would also be discriminatory to functional programmers, I guess).

Have you ever been watching a video of a photo-realistic digital avatar and been really impressed at how well they programmed blinks and facial expressions, but remained critical of the hair textures and facial deformation, only to realize you're looking at a video recording of an actual human person?

I have.

If you're concerned about the plight of folks in and can't help directly, remember you can donate to help people who remain in the country.

There's the Global Giving "Afghanistan Emergency Fund": globalgiving.org/projects/afgh
which distributes to local aid groups
CharityNavigator.org lists other charities as well that are responding to the turmoil in Afghanistan as well as addressing the long-term issues in the country: charitynavigator.org/index.cfm

You can also seek out local refugee resettlement agencies if your country is accepting people who've left Afghanistan as refugees.

@izaya so, I vaguely understand squashfs as a layered file system. You have a script that runs some command for each...prefix? IDK what you'd call it. Like, each revision?

There used to be a maintainer (I think it was Debian anyway...maybe ) who made these really clever, and actually descriptive puns in changelog entries. I don't remember the person's name, and I don't see the puns anymore, but I always appreciated seeing them.

did you know the soyuz return capsule's centre of mass is offset 20° from its centre line so it can abuse aerodynamics to brake better in the atmosphere?

@moshtodon
"Animals are not here for us. They are here with us."

...we can still eat them though. Do you think there is something fundamentally wrong about eating animals?

@waweic

@moshtodon Look, I appreciate what you're saying, but my point is that food is intertwined in people's lives and relationships, so changing to a more restrictive diet means changing relationships around you. And don't tell me something like "Oh, it's not that bad" that's a judgment people make for themselves and to a *lot* of people, it's not worth the trade-off.
Regarding your last point, I think you are implying that taking the life of an animal to eat it's flesh is morally wrong? I genuinely don't understand what you're getting at. I think it's wasteful to kill an animal and not make use of it's body, but that isn't what we're talking about...
