in learning scales on (probably goes just as well for other -like payments), and perhaps for plucking in general, do you have a dedicated finger per string, or do you move your plucking/picking finger around? I started learning by plucking almost exclusively with my index or thumb based on whatever was comfortable, but I've started using a finger per string for the bilateral stimulus and to improve coordination (presumably. IDK if it really works that way)

a propos of nothing in particular, I just wanted to say, COPIC markers are really f*cking great. I've had mine for probably more than a decade at this point--barely used them, but...they still lay down ink like the first day I brought 'em home.

Accordion to a recent survey, replacing words with the names of musical instruments often goes unnoticed.

@izaya there's also "Preface", of course. since forewords are typically written by some real person other than the author, preface may be more appropriate

@izaya are you looking to title a section of your novel? if it's that, just call it "Foreword". Don Quixote happened a while ago, so I think your readers will go with you that far, at least

Photographing a stationary dragonfly is a piece of cake. Photographing a dragonfly in flight. . . not so much! Viewpoint Park Pond High Point West #Seattle: #Photography

@trinsec never heard of it, but I watched a clip, and it looks pretty funny!

@trinsec agreed. the end seemed rather abrupt. it seems like they maybe had a bit more budget for animation this season though: more mouths flapping

Yes, cis people, it's transphobic to describe trans rights as "controversial". In the same way that it would be anti-scientific to describe climate change or the existence of COVID-19 as "controversial".

The existence of a loud and annoying group of denialists does not a controversy make.

@Fanua do people on the international dateline run (sail?) back and forth over the line on new year's saying, "it's 2022!...It's 2023... It's 2022!"?

I'd do that

@alexreed re your follow-up, i don't know about general sentiments: in school assignments we always tried to get at that by picking l quotes from publications, but it seems to me that you could pick and choose to cast some fringe ideas as commonly held or accepted.

anyway, that just sounds like a typical postmodernist take, so maybe you could get an answer by exploring criticism.

Where can I learn the history of present-tense historicizing?

By this I mean gestures (by scholars, journalists, artists, victors, victims) toward the surrounding world that ask or answer, "How will capital-H History view this moment?"

When has that been more or less of a thing? Why? With what hope? With what results?

And the followup:

Am I correct in perceiving a modern feeling that we move too fast and dumb for History's paltry justice to be meaningful, now or in some eventual future?

@trinsec that's pretty nihilistic.

some things I do improve skills that are ultimately prosocial while also being fun. at least for how I play video games, it's just a time sink.

I had forgotten what a massive waste of time video games are. I just unplugged my gaming computer and put it in my storage closet.

Atypical spoilers

Atypical is a pretty good show. I understand the season one criticisms about including actually autistic talent, but I think they course-corrected pretty well. Also, the relationship between the parents was interesting in how they decided to stay together, but it wasn't "for the kids", but reflected some mutual growth.

Also, I enjoyed the Izzie+Casey storylines. I was already shipping them by the end of their first episode together. I really thought the repair of their relationship after their (dumb) breakup wouldn't make it in, but I think it was handled pretty well for the time they had to do it: wasn't just like a switch flipped, which I was worried about when they broke up so close to the finale
