@dpthorngren lol. I have had this in my email signature for a couple years at work
ISS in orbit: 8km/s
Earth's solar orbit: 30km/s
Milky Way rotation: 210km/s
Great Attractor pull: 600km/s
We're always falling for something more attractive.
Happy #Valentinesday

I'm glad to have more space to play further down on the fret board, but the pressure needed to hold tension on the strings on my tenor is killing me

@robotmonkeys@hachyderm.io I vaguely recall the LEGO turnaround involved scaling down the number of colors and some of the kits. possibly related to that mid '00s dip? @kims

I really enjoy Ellen's anthropomorphisms. I might draw comics based on them at some point
All these sites are great. I love browsing through them and being reminded of the pre-corporate internet. People idly watching this thread and clicking on the "Show all the ads" link love them too.
And Improbable Island players still love seeing ads? Which is weird? But kinda interesting if you've seen 10,000 ads in your life and 9,999 of them were crap and suddenly there's a non-crappy one?
Anyway add your own website at https://www.improbableisland.com/hobbysites.php and please boost, I wanna see more cool sites!
@gtw that's epic: well done getting a beer in your name
> In my experience, ringing is completely secular
Good to know. Generally, I like being around religious people. My only issue is I don't like being proselytized at or pretending I believe in something I don't.
@borland speak for yourself: this introvert likes it😆 it's a low-stakes interaction with a time limit and fulfills the small amount of face-to-face interaction I do actually need to stay well mentally and emotionally.
@JR_Kelly
re: grocery checkout, OMG yes. I would always go to the checkout clerk before because they're usually faster with all my produce than I would be, and I could have a bit of chat, but my grocery store revamped everything and only have, like, two people doing checkout.
Like, is *this* the automated future we were promised?
Anyway, trivial gripe over.
@gtw Thanks for sharing: The article is altogether lovely to read.
I first heard about change ringing in a documentary I no longer remember anything else about. The physicality of the practice, the math, and mental challenge involved all fascinated me but the religious aspect of it made me wary as nonreligious person. Nonetheless, I'm sure I'll look more into it for the math, if nothing else 🙂
@11thJeff for sure boosting is key to people finding things on Mastodon.
I think the server is more agnostic to any kind of sorting and filtering your client app might do beyond muting certain conversations or accounts. there's no reason your client couldn't find the peak activity for those you follow and present their posts whenever you want to see them
@timorl it doesn't happen all the time though, right? the section on further research on Wikipedia makes me think that there could be aids to prevent that from happening by reducing distractions during the transition. like maybe instead of showing the last thing you were looking at on your phone, you go to a blank prompt after login, maybe with a button to pull up your previous workspace... send like a potential difficulty is the UI doesn't know what's distracting vs what's relevant because it can't know what state you hold in your head https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doorway_effect#Further%20Research
@gtw thanks! I looked up the peals you named, but I don't really get it. I guess what I'm doing is like just having a single "track" (not sure on the terminology) since I only exchange one pair of adjacent notes from the last sequence to the next. I'd like to try swapping more though: should be fun.
I had a hunch that my construction would be planar for 4 characters after I started drawing it. What I'm doing is basically a "permutohedron". Wikipedia tells me the kind I'm playing with is isomorphic to a kind of Caley graph, but I'm not sure what the implications are yet of that.
IDK what minimus methods are.
I wonder if when I forget the thing I wanted to look up on my phone or laptop by the time I've unlocked the screen, it's the same thing happening as with the doorway effect. from reading "On Intelligence" I did get the idea that our use of functional brain structures for location can be used more generally for virtual locations... makes sense if a computer interface is, in the brain, like a place even without direct analogies to physical spaces, like in so-called virtual worlds--we already use "navigation" and "location" to talk about "moving around" a computer interface
@elsieleerobbins ♥️ missing that breakout chart for happy little trees though😁
