🎬 Classic movie watching list

@bgcarlisle understand any such list would be short, but what about Harold and Maude?

@KitsuneAlicia@octodon.social why shit on capitalism for lack of innovation on sodium batteries? if the problem is that some existing energy storage firms haven't capitalized on the tech, wouldn't it just be that there's a lack of creativity in those companies?

@valleyforge if centralized is where all clients that use the service access servers under one domain of control, then decentralized would be where clients can access the service from servers under diverse domains of control. ex: You can use Google's nameservers and I can use my ISP's and we both get DNS

I know it's part of the point of the parable but it's funny that the "Good" in "Good Samaritan" was needed because the Jews hated the Samaritans. Like, they had to be clear it was just that one good one.

@valleyforge my point is "decentralized" doesn't say what you actually want - there's a lot of definitions that fit, including current DNS

Why does Matt Inman draw himself as an obese person in his comics? He's a rather thin man (or at least was in 2014).

I really dislike the "meat prison" meme? Your body IS part of you, you think with your gut as much as you think with your brain or gonads, so much of who you are outside your hunger and horniness is what has been stuck in the physical memory of your brain. If you recorded your memories differently you would be a different person, if you did not have a sexdrive and you do, you would be a different person, you are the sum of small processecies taking place all over your body, not a trapped mind.

re: A lot of rambling about abusive tech and people who code it

@trysdyn @five well, legal is one thing, ethical is another. You can't really get ethical leaders from unethical people - you just have to replace your leaders. Your smart executives (ethical or not) will listen to legal if the downsides cost enough.

For example: "Springer Nature — Research Book Series: Transactions on Computational Science and Computational Intelligence" is publishing a neophrenological paper called "A Deep Neural Network Model to Predict Criminality Using Image Processing."

The title is both admirably clear and terribly obscure. You could subtitle it: "Keep arresting brown people."

I didn't make the connection until I heard it on the Marketplace radio show, but a lot of the world has been living like hikikomori these past months

Lioconcha hieroglyphica, a mollusc with a shell that looks like it has an unknown language inscribed on it.

lgbt+ rights, us politics, supreme court (+)

latimes.com/politics/story/202

The US Supreme Court just ruled (in deciding the case Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia - for some reason, few of the articles about the decision mention that?) that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 covers homosexual and transgender individuals because punishing a trait or behavior that would go unpunished in someone of a different sex is discrimination by sex.

And it's a 6-3 decision.

It's more limited than we'd like but that seems like a good thing, and however limited it is, it pushes the norm pretty hard in a good direction.
