Fediverse vs Twitter cont.

@readsteven
I didn't know you had a podcast.

I assume this is the one in question: readsteven.libsyn.com/

I'll have to check it out 😁
@tsturm

@Downes I don't know squat about WordPress ActivityPub plugins, but I'd wager the extra @ would be a problem. unless you get a better suggestion, and if it's not too difficult to make a new user just for testing, I'd try a username without an embedded @ ...other than that, I'd guess there's a log file on your http server that you can look at for PHP logs (I don't recall if WordPress also has it's own log file) that should give a hint @ton

I set up the ActivityPub plugin on my WorldPress blog at leftish.media but it doesn't seem to work here at all - I cannot follow @stephen@downes.ca@leftish.media here in Mastodon. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

@neonkaaa maybe? you're saying that if this theoretical deep space telescope array is based on interferometry, positioning wouldn't be a problem? I think it still would be, but I'm fuzzy on the principles there.
It is a different kind of telescope from JWST, so probably my comparison isn't germane. @izaya

@izaya I can't tell you that wouldn't work, but I remember someone much more knowledgeable than me at NASA was looking at using stars for positioning outside of earth orbit because atomic clocks weren't enough

@izaya I've thought about this too. I don't see a reason why not except that positioning seems like it'd be a wickedly hard problem. think about how long it took to align all the jwst optics, and they had rigid structure to rely on.

okay so if the event horizon telescope is earth-sized

what if we built one solar system sized

stuck radio telescopes out in the oort cloud

sadly, it's very overcast in my neck of the woods, so no eclipse for this boy

had another go at bagels. they're actually worse than last time in terms of presentation, partly because they weren't properly submerged, but the taste is on point : cinnamon sugar and raisin

@acousticmirror @hugoestr @IngaLovinde Lisp machines existed, were sold commercially. They had built-in hardware garbage collectors and tagged pointers, so what is normally associated with "dynamic languages being slow" was in fact plenty fast because the hardware itself handled it. Were even the world leader in 3d graphics for a while.

Watch this glorious mulleted dude (enby?) drinking wine and demonstrating the software for the future we didn't get (and once had) youtube.com/watch?v=8RSQ6gATnQ

@heavensfeel I think you're kidding... but I've got some hope for cryptocurrency if it can be backed by actual value. iirc, cryptocurrency is mined by solving a useless but expensive-to-solve problem: it would be great if you got a coin by proving you have some actual goods or services... like a kind of technologically enhanced barter system. like, governments pay you in IOUs for government services that you can trade for other services. the currency system then becomes a system for addressing and assessing value for an exchange plus a system for retiring tokens of value (e.g., if you exchange government-service-tokens for actual government services)

I've thought about this for literally all of 8 minutes, so it's probably a dumb unworkable idea

New actor announced: prfl.net/2022/05/sex-education

should be interesting. Gatwa's character in Sex Education was very energetic: curious whether he'll bring the same kind of energy to this role. At least we know he'll be a Doctor with style 😄

I wish I had the cajones to say things like, " has won". that's a level of confidence about the future I've never been able to muster. I barely have a grasp on the present in a global sense

@Nika2022 @lupyuen I think you can take a more measured perspective on that: different investments do have different levels of risk and most brokerages have loss-limiting mechanisms (e.g., stop-loss/-limit orders) you can set up in advance to prevent losing *all* your money in stocks

@lupyuen disappointing that they can't even get straight the name of the deceased. also, there are obvious ways to prevent objectionable content from going to children through content filtering and age verification

when you overexpose night photos and you have a lot of moon light and no artificial light you get pictures which look like they are taken on a sunny day - just with stars.
