Hi everyone! 👋

Today I'm going to talk a little bit about black holes and what I do as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford. I can't cover all black hole physics, or all of my work, but I'll try my best to highlight some of the most interesting things! Join me for a wild ride through spacetime!

Some of them are hedges and some of them are speech disfluency and a small handful are both, though usually there's not a big overlap. Your examples make me think it's more of the former.

Trivia re the latter.
Older Swedish men, often rich ones, often use a sort of gnnnnrrrr sound to fill their gaps and keep their claim on the proverbial mic. "Knarra" it's called. A power move that they do. Most people don't noticed it but once you've learned to recognize it, it sounds ridiculous.

this one wrinkled my brain. it takes me back to the idea from Don Hoffman (ted.com/speakers/donald_hoffma) that we generate our own reality.

As much as I've tried to acknowledge that I'm situated in the universe, so can't really observe objectively, at my core, I still cling to the idea of a Cartesian space that the objects of the universe are arranged within, where my body is a sort of avatar in the space, with my mind controlling it from "over here". Walker's conjecture on the nature of the big bang was very effective in pushing me outside that notion. I'll have to read more on their work (and, always, need to see more experimental results), but while I'm still clinging, I may have let a finger slip...

...which makes this sound rather dire😁 actually it's very exciting since I've been fascinated with questions about the nature of reality since I was a kid, but it's been some time since I've heard something that really changes how I think about it this deeply.

I don’t know what this is or what I’m doing but:
Hi! 👋🏼 I’m Adi Foord. I study the activity supermassive black holes and focus mostly on systems that are in the process of merging 😮. I love X-ray astrophysics and created the *very* popular hashtag #XraysAreTheBestRays. I love my two cats more than most humans and I enjoy making hiking, making hot sauce and stickers!

How do I find more #astronomers and #womeninSTEM to follow? Help this millennial out with effective hashtags!

Hi there! I'm Lena 👋 I'm an astrobiologist, NASA Fellow, and science communicator! I create educational content about #astrobiology, the #science dedicated to studying how life got started on Earth the potential for life on other worlds! I mostly post on TikTok, but I plan on starting to use Mastodon, too. Excited to connect with you all! 😀

"Mom, can I have a 6502 computer?"
"No, we have a 6502 at home."

The 6502 at home... #retrocomputing #mos6502

Meeting a (semi-)famous person isn't how I expected it. In my case, I was a few feet away from them and was going to say something, but I just sort of realized that I didn't actually have anything to say to them other than "enjoyed the show" or whatever. They weren't performing then, so, like with any stranger, there was no connection, even though I'd listened to them for hours by that time. I even saw them walking on the street, a block away, a few minutes later, and almost called out, but stopped myself thinking to myself, "they don't know you." It was an odd experience.

tried making "pretzel bagels". basically, modified the pretzel recipe I had done before, but just made hoops instead of the pretzel "knot"... apparently the way I made the hoops isn't typical: you're meant to poke a hole into a ball and then widen the hole, which makes more sense, honestly. The way I got the gluten stands to go more in the shape of the bagel is cool though

(no pics because they kinda look shit even if I'm still proud of em)

sometimes I forget that most of the people living today probably wouldn't be here if not for artificial fertilizer.

I somehow didn't realize this movie is only from 2000. I thought it was older since classic films translate to "old movie" in my head

Fedi is the most strange thing in the world.

On normal social media, you write a message and people just ignore it forever.

Here, you write a message, it stays ignored for 1 or 2 years, and then all of a sudden, for no reason, with no explanation, someone finds it somehow, boosts it, and it gets 200 likes and 120 boosts.

What the fuck.

I'm sure someone will boost this message in 2021 or 2022.

been trying to find a copy of this dang song for hours since it got stuck in my head! basically the only song I remember from Pokemon other than the theme songs

I terminated a network cable for the first time! I feel like I just completed some kind of geeky rite of passage

I just finished my last commission and I'm currently without a job.
I'm not strapped for cash, but having an income would be nice.
A company here in Rome wants to hire me for a job I'm not interested in: I've been working in the field for over 5 years and I'm now an expert.
I'm now trying to change my professional fields, but this offer is really enticing since I would get a reliable income (something I never had) for a job I can easily do.
I'm a bit unsure about accepting the offer, mainly because I don't want to be a dick to them: I'll keep searching jobs even though I'll start working there and I doubt I will be staying there for more than 2-3 months.
This might create some problems to those guys and I wouldn't be happy about it

On the other hand, I would get 2-3 months of salary, which wouldn't be bad at all since right now I'm burning through my savings.

I walked around my neighborhood and saw three toads, in three separate locations within the span of about five minutes, and I wasn't even looking for them, so I'm pretty chuffed just now.

How are you?
