i think a lot about that passage in Dawn (Butler, 1987) where Lilith is wandering around and drops an orange peel on the ground and damages the local flora by doing that. every time I hear something about how humans ham-handedly or accidentally introduced invasive species or just don't bother to think about how our products will work back into the earth

I was really annoyed by this BBC commentary on Iraqi women getting cosmetic surgery. they talked to the surgeon who described this as an empowering thing for these women to change their appearance, then this Western commentator tosses out some decontextualized nonsense about late stage capitalism. like, maybe acknowledge that these women have some agency? that the guy who's talking to these women on a daily basis could have some insight? I get it that you want women to feel powerful however they look and maybe society injects this preference for youth, but also implying it's bad and wrong for these women to want to control their images and decide on what *they* want to see in the mirror is pretty shitty as well
Hello #Astrodon!
I guess we are doing introductions. I work at Steward Observatory in Tucson, Arizona; primary research area is debris disks (theory and obs). I am a member of the JWST MIRI and NIRcam instrument teams and spent time commissioning MIRI. I will be posting a ton of GTO disk results this first year, so do follow along. First target to be revealed soon: Fomalhaut. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:
👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.
Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration
Prototype for a new mug. The lettering & the solar system schematic were made into 3d printed stamps which I impressed on the wet clay.
After the mug was bisque fired, I painted black underglaze in the recesses before glazing & firing again.
E pur si muove = And yet it moves (attributed to Galileo)

As my #introduction post, I wanted to share pictures of my artwork! ^_^ I paint nature, space themed fun things and COFFEE & DESSERTS (my fav things to paint :D)
hi! i'm minute (38, nonbinary, they/he). i live in berlin, where i spend most of my waking time running a (mostly) open hardware computer company. i design electronics in kicad. i'm also into music (listening and production), especially all kind sof synth and wave, post-punk, industrial, batcave but also some rap. i'm dissatisfied with audio production tools on linux so always thinking about writing my own sequencer, but lately i have little energy outside of work. #introduction 1/2
I'm looking for other #firstnations people on here too.
That's right - it's #SpaceTalkTuesday time! 🚀 🔭 🪐
Today it's going to be a short one all about:
~How We Name Exoplanets~
A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!
So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.
This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.
A capable software engineer and aspirating (sic) cook. Also posting about space stuff (mostly NASA) occasionally
