Probably directly relevant to today’s M6.1 earthquake near Duzce: a map of earthquakes along the North #Anatolian #fault, where in 1999 the Izmit M7.5 #earthquake in August was followed by a M7.2 event near #Duzce a few months later. Both events were devastating, but much larger than today’s #quake.

In this simple #python script which uses the @obspy software, I have asked for a whole day's worth of data on staton IU.HNR on the #SolomonIslands following the magnitude 7 #earthquake at 02:03 UT (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000irfb/executive)
So more (15 minute) lines of #data appear as the day progresses. Still many #aftershocks of magnitude up to 5.2. It's amazing what you can get with just 12 lines of code. Data via #IRIS

What does thawing #permafrost look like? Here's an example from a palsa mire in northern Norway: The permafrost in these peat mounds is thawing, due to #climate change, at which point they collapse. The peat gets submerged, and microorganisms convert soil carbon into #methane – a powerful greenhouse gas. But also: mosses and sedges begin to grow, which again store #carbon. At the University of Oslo, we are studying how this may act as a potential climate tipping point.

There is quite an intensive #aftershock sequence following the #SolomonIslands #Earthquake This is a "mock helicorder plot" from the station IU.HNR (Honiara, Solomon Islands). According to posts on twitter, there are significant damages and at least 2 fatalities after a moderate magnitude M5.6 #earthquake in western Java island, Indonesia. Inland shallow fault rupture, close to towns, likely explain the destructions.

A magnitude Mw6.9 #earthquake offshore south-central #Sumatra.

Mechanism and location suggest rupture on the shallow part of the #subduction #megathrust close to the trench (on the very shallow dipping fault plane). However, modelled depth of ~19km, if true, seems little too deep given the closeness with the trench (USGS gives same depth and mechanism). This means that we cannot exclude a rupture on the steep fault plane within the oceanic plate.
