Morning folks, time for my first Mastodon thread (!)

Ahead of the #midterms tomorrow, I want to talk about the tragic politicisation of science in the US.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the Republicans became the anti-science party, but the process probably began in the 1980s, when the Christian right first emerged as a major force in conservative American politics.

Since then, the journey has been smooth and swift, and there is now a stunning partisan divide on confidence in science 😥

Turns out Twitter can act quickly and decisively on sad Elon being called names by verified accounts but not on death threats, slurs and violent incitement against marginalised people.

Hello! Well, I’m getting lots of calls from media outlets around the world re #TwitterMigration. Elon’s very upset with me because he thinks I stole his identity on Twitter but my handle always said @kathygriffin. I changed my nickname to Elon musk, and I changed my profile picture to his profile picture. I wasn’t the first or last to do it, but account was the one he saw.

@joshtpm Twitter came up and grew at a time when a lot of people who were previously tech-averse discovered the benefits of being active in an online community. I'm hopeful that the migration here is a sign that people are both more tech-savvy and less willing to accept a toxic community. What Musk doesn't, in his bones, understand is that the community on a platform like these, is the boss, not the consumer. And his hubristic takeover made that point clear to many people.

I noticed there seems to be a lot less #prison content over here than THE OTHER PLACE so I asked a group of prisoners with contraband phones - they’re in a message chain together - if they had joined the #migration yet… and none had heard of mastodon. BUT they said they are wary of social media apps bc they eat up data… would mastodon typically use less data than Twitter or the same? I assume (?) not more?

@Anabelthe1st I think the no ads thing is great here. Also everyone here seems authentic and more enthusiastic about making a good first impression in order to make this work. Very exciting. I think it’s the people and not celebrity status that make a community. Everyone is starting over and learning something new which is humbling and fosters a sense of trust out of need. We’re on the precipice of something great I think.

I've already lost 10K followers on Twitter since Musk took over so I figured I'd try to figure out where everyone is going.

I am still somewhat confused about the status of people on other servers and my ability to follow or interact with them.
