The adorable Venezuelan poodle moth was discovered and photographed in 2009 by Dr. Arthur Anker. It’s supposedly the only sighting of this critter, but insects are small and Earth is big. #nature #photography

Just imagine the diversity of species we haven’t found yet…

With #Galactica and #ChatGPT I'm seeing people again getting excited about the prospect of using language models to "access knowledge" (i.e. instead of search engines). They are not fit for that purpose --- both because they are designed to just make shit up and because they don't support information literacy. Chirag Shah and I lay this out in detail in our CHIIR 2022 paper:

I made this one with two clothespins, two plastic caps, wire and beads, covered it with a white undercoat then painted it. It's inspired by the amazing work of @ArtFromRachel.
(Also it's a functional mini flower pot!)

Now seems like a good time to talk about how far-right extremists are using the Overton Window theory to force their ideas into the mainstream. The premise here is that today’s fringe ideas/beliefs can become tomorrow’s normal by shifting the boundaries of acceptable discourse. You do that by introducing people to more & more extreme ideas, so everything else seems reasonable in comparison.

eg, when “praising Hitler” becomes the comparison point, low-key bigotry suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. 1/

Was reminded of this during a #Microsoft event this morning. Still great.

The myth of Elon Musk as a genius building a better future for everyone is falling apart — and it’s about time!

As I wrote in Time a few months ago, we need to realize he hasn’t just taken a bad turn in the past few months. He’s always been selling us a lie, and nothing shows that better than his fake transport projects that distracted from real solutions.

His downfall can’t come soon enough.
