There is something wonderful about seeing lots of people opening their own blogs and taking their own steps to retain ownership of their data while still making it accessible on the open web!

This and joining the Federation, one way or the other, by joining an instance or by running yours, registration closed or open, the point is, it brings decentralization into practice, bit by bit, until the loads of us combined can change the trajectory of the internet for good!

For those of us who came from Twitter: here, clicking "favorite" is different from clicking "like" in Twitter. It just tells the writer "yeah, nice", without enhancing visibility. The only way to enhance visibility is to "boost" (basically, retweet). I suspect all this will change (different clients will have different algorithms, etc) but for now this is how it is...

If you listen closely. Tonight at 2AM you will hear a reverberating F#*K emanating from all teaching hospitals as residents have to endure an extra hour on call.

Struggling with timeouts, server offline, or error hosts? 🙅‍♂️ It’s not just you.

The massive influx of people from #twittermigration is putting a strain on bigger instances (the server you signed up to).

They are mostly run by volunteers, frantically working in the background to patch holes and upgrade the infrastructure to meet demand. It’s not the whole of #mastodon that’s down.

My best advice? Make yourself a drink, let the cat out, and it’ll be running smoothly again soon 🤗

It seems like Mastodon is really starting to take off. Seems like atleast something positive is coming out of this "rich super villian takes over social network" situation.

Sometimes dogs and mountains. I am really excited to see so many pals already here, and excited to meet & learn from you all! 💚

I've been here a few years, so here are a few tips I think might be useful.
- Mastodon is its own thing: some parts might feel like Twitter, some parts won't. It's not intended as a replacement.
- You'll figure it out! Don't worry if it doesn't make much sense right now.
- There's no end-to-end encryption, so don't send sensitive info over Mastodon.
- It's run by volunteers around the world who manage the servers/instances in their own time and often at their own expense.
- Go and enjoy it!

What Mastodon feels like

Your Mastodon feed won't improve through passive engagement. There is no algorithm to suggest and share what you liked.

You must actively follow different people to see what they boost, and you must boost for other people to see. Some people are from different servers. You will see more of what they see organically. You can also hashtag to increase visibility.

There is no quote retweet either. You have to actively engage and comment in the thread.
