1944年5月16日，奥斯维辛集中营的罗姆人（注：也被称为吉普赛人）囚犯发动起义。

1942年12月16日，海因里希·希姆莱下令将所有罗姆人赶入集中营进行种族灭绝，在那之后，党卫队就在奥斯维辛二号营比克瑙内设立了B区IIe，被称为Zigeunerfamilienlager（吉普赛之家营区）。自那时起，已有大约2.3万罗姆人被驱逐至此，其中活下来还有6500人。

今天，5月16日19时，宵禁的锣声响起，党卫队的人乘车进入了吉普赛之家营区。大约60名党卫队队员来到营房前，但屋内的罗姆人手持铲子、小刀和石头，拒绝踏出一步。党卫队队员颇感震惊和意外，随后退回了他们的车上。在与指挥官商量后，他们离开了营区。罗姆人设法保住了自己的性命，暂时免于一死。

只可惜，这样的光景并未持续多久。在整个6月和7月，罗姆人将被转移到偶数营区，为成千上万的匈牙利犹太人空出奇数营区。然后，在8月1日上午，党卫队把大约半数适合劳动的罗姆人转移到奥斯维辛一号、拉文斯布吕克和布痕瓦尔德集中营。

而在8月2日和3日，党卫队士兵将关闭吉普赛之家营区，用毒气室杀害剩下的2,897名罗姆人妇女、儿童、老人以及体弱者，并在5号火葬场焚烧他们的尸体。
