Fedi thoughts, comparison to hegemonic social media.
An interesting distinction between the fedi and other social media I will call hegemonic--not only in that it's what most of society understand by it, but also because it's both a reflection and a tool of formation of hegemonic public opinion--is that there is only us here. Us, citizens, demediatised, but also, largely, powerless.
On X, FB, and other hegemonic places, it makes sense to shout and protest, because power is listening. In fact, power is surveiling, but that's another issue. It is the analogue of marching or picketing public institutions, which must make some form of an answer.
But the fedi is a different place: in many ways the most public of public places, it is also disconnected from power. Protesting on the fedi is like marching through our living rooms, taking placards up and down the stairs of the blocs of flats we live in.
My point, if I even have a point, is that on the fedi, activism and political performance (in a non-pejorative sense) are still taking the forms and content of hegemonic media, but there's no power to demand from, nobody to answer.
This is not to say there's no point in doing politics on the fedi, but I suspect it makes sense to adapt it to the fact we're not, here, in the position to channel our voices to the powerful, only to each other. It's a good place to inform and learn, to discuss, to organise, and to support each other, but we gain nothing from appealing to a "them" who isn't even around.
It's Saturday a few hours east of here and I can't wait to post this cute shot!
