Sewing machines, old ones passed to me by neighbors whose lawn I mowed, were my first introduction to thinking about processes in a mechanical context, which means keeping track of many things at once, and that leads to organizing one's own work, establishing personal rules which can be loose in definition but must rigorously adhered to, preempting common pitfalls (like losing parts) and streamlining our physical engagement with a task or work-piece.

Taking apart and restoring these machines was my first experience of self-directed work. I set the tasks, I performed the operations, I had to conceive chains of causalities and execute my role in them, facilitating the machine and the tools and the materials to come together to produce new things.

The sewing machines made around the turn of the 20th century for home use are small miracles of intricacy and precision, fascinating and beautiful in their own right, but they're much more than that, they're a means of production, empowering their operators to both create and maintain garments and other contrivances of cloth or leather or suitably supple plastics.

#Eels regularly swim in waterways where #cocaine has been detected, like the #Thames River in London. Previous studies have detected the drug in eels’ systems, but Capaldo and her team wanted to find out exactly what that meant. They exposed young eels to levels of cocaine equivalent to those found in the environment (20 ng/L−1) for 30-50 days. (All experiments were conducted under ethical guidelines for animal experimentation.)

The result: The cocaine accumulated at various levels in — and caused damage to — the eels’ brains, muscles, livers, kidneys, digestive tracts, gills, skin, spleens and gonads.
