*Not specifically COVID-19 related, but a friend's mother had to go to the ER last night at 9pm, and they only got them into the hospital sometime this morning. ER loads are extremely high; now is not a good time to get sick or injured, with anything. (not that it's ever a good time, but the emergency rooms are particularly busy right now).

Kind of incredible to have in one week a widebody-on-dash8 collision and a 737 lose an entire wall panel in flight -- two once-in-a-decade incidents of the "that REALLY isn't supposed to happen" variety, both of which you'd expect to have multiple fatalities, and have 0 civilians dead.

Gawd help me, I might have figured out what Trump was talking about vis-a-vis "water" and "magnets".
I remember when they were working out the kinks in the new electromagnetic catapult technology on the USS Gerald R. Ford, Trump said they should go back to using steam. I'm guessing those wires in his head crossed and he blurted out about (electro)magnets and (sea)water.

Researchers explore changes to #microbiome following weight-loss surgery

Researchers at the University of Toronto and its partner hospitals are finding that changes in #gutmicrobiota after #bariatricsurgery can directly improve #metabolism, independent of food intake, #weightloss and other metabolic factors.

And the filibuster was the result of an error when drafting new Senate rules in 1805, possibly because Aaron Burr was distracted by having just been indicted for murdering Alexander Hamilton.

It’s been 17 years since Mitch McConnell started filibustering everything and like 15 or 16 years since political reporters began treating that as totally normal and writing that routine legislation did or didn’t have the 60 votes necessary to pass. #media #uspol #gop

New ignition switch, new battery, new starter in the Coug, it was time. Man does the new switch feel weird though, heh, so precise! #67CUGR

Let’s take a deeper look at the design of the XRISM X-ray telescope.

The telescope consists of 2 identical X-ray Mirror Assemblies (XMA) that focus X-rays on 2 instruments 5.6 m away.

1. The Xtend X-ray imager (CCD based camera). Energy band = 0.4-13 keV, Field of View (FOV) = 38'x38', energy resolution ≤250 eV.

2. The Resolve calorimeter-based X-ray spectrometer. Energy band = 0.3-12 keV, FOV = 3’x3’, energy resolution ≤7 eV.

Question to researchers & users of Web of Science: how do I make a search like the one on the picture? My only current possibility (just registered) is to search on author, name or organisation.

Rough draft history:
Dubya read about the horrors of plagues and such. Scary stuff, so he hired the right people to prepare for it.
Dubya handed the baton to Barack Obama who continued on with preparing for a pandemic.
Barack handed the baton to Trumpelstiltskin who threw the baton in the trash so he could add that preparedness money to tax breaks for billionaires.
Pandemic arrives at the worst time while an idiot is in the oval office.
Idiot blames everyone except the mirror on the wall.

I let my students cheat if it's done in a smart way, they just don't know I know. In the real world, you have access to tools, supports, research, and Google. I want them to learn to use things wisely to do a good job instead of failing and not caring.
