Shout out to CBC News. To my knowledge, it's the only network that makes a conscious effort to pronounce "kilometre" correctly.

I've been cutting back part of a large, overgrown, bramble filled hedge in the front garden this evening now that the tweeters have vacated it.

I've come to the conclusion that brambles are the Captain Scarlet of the plant world: you can smash them, and their bodies may burn. You can crash them, but you know they'll return, to live again.

Transporting letters was in early modern Europe a business, and the development of postal services is deeply connected to the emergence of an early modern news system. In this image, a messenger in 1632 is bringing and taking handwritten newsletters: the textual components of every news publication of the period. These are handwritten observations, packed in units, sealed in letters. News in printed form were very often handwritten news. Until enough printed news very available to copy from.

I can't resist one more coda on the UPS / Teamsters deal:

UPS is one of those organizations that stands in stark defiance of the notion that unions are always some kind of vampiric drain on companies and industries.

YES, absolutely, unions can slow down needed changes in some industries.

But the kind of "business unionism" we have in the U.S. is generally pretty good at not killing the goose (business) that lays the golden eggs.

Unions are as important as ever.

There's a Change dot org petition that says to legalize nuclear bombs and remove #SecondAmendment restrictions. No. #Oppenheimer is rolling in his grave.

(The point apparently is to overturn laws restricting the Second Amendment by taking it to the extreme.)
