It was delightful decorating the tree with 6yo today ... and a bit bittersweet. We brought my mom's xmas ornaments home this year. The seed box was hers; the figure my daughter made for her - it's my mom holding a carrot from the garden.

It's been 19 months since she died and I still miss her. Good egg, she was.

“It is impossible to imagine the universe run by a wise, just, and omnipotent God, but it is quite easy to imagine it run by a board of gods. If such a board actually exists it operates precisely like the board of a corporation that is losing money.” H.L. Mencken

Yesterday's Christmas bird count at about 3 degs F. and windy. Seeing king and common eiders and long-tail ducks, even though the ice if forming. Other birds included McKay's and snow buntings, willow ptarmigan, the ubiquitous common raven, perhaps some redpolls but haven't seen all the reports yet. Also glaucous and glaucous winged gulls and herring gulls. Image of another on our team.

I mean look at this guy! He was a smidge intense in his younger years, apparently. 😎

Kind of sad we didn’t meet him until his late 70s, but glad we got to know him at all.

Our neighbor, a close friend of my spouse’s, passed away last week. John Thomas was a #goldsmith with a master’s in mathematics from #UniversityOfChicago. He was a master of #repoussee, die-struck #jewelry and #engraving. He was also just a sweet, generous and curious guy.

Besides mourning his passing, we were struck by how many people from the block were looking out for John, people who went out of their way to care for the quiet #elder in apartment 3. More than we even knew about.
