There’s a popular narrative that in April 2022 there was a ready peace deal between #Ukraine and #Russia which was then, in the most primitive version, rejected by Ukraine because Boris Johnson told them so. A few months ago I have carefully checked the timeline of events of that period, and it came out even at the peak of negotiations it was Russia (namely Lavrov) who publicly declared there’s “no agreement” between the countries.

Daniel Szeligowski, analyst of #Poland PISM think tank, explains details of Russia’s proposal:

I’m already fed up with this story, so this is probably my last comment on this matter. There was no deal between Ukraine and Russia in March-April 2022. Indeed, both sides were working on the agreement, exchanged draft versions of it several times, and at some point Zelensky did believe the deal was possible, but what the Russian delegation ultimately put on the table - Ukraine’s neutrality, far reaching disarmament of Ukraine’s armed forces, and treaty provisions allowing Moscow to permanently influence Ukrainian internal politics - turned out to be not acceptable to Ukraine at all, and Ukraine was eventually right to reject it. The U.S./UK pressure on Zelensky is just one hell of a conspiracy theory. Russia wanted the Western countries to broker this deal by means of them giving - to neutral and disarmed, so basically helpless - Ukraine security guarantees. And Boris Johnson also was right to refuse, since this would mean the West would be obliged in future to defend Ukraine with its own troops on the ground (as Ukrainian army would have been largely dissolved). His answer to Zelensky was: no, we won’t sign up to this deal, but we will help you defend yourself here and now, you decide. And Zelensky took the offer, especially given the fact that the Russian troops around Kyiv were running out of steam, and the Bucha massacre was revealed at that time, so the public mood in Ukraine changed too. The rest of the story is widely known.

On top of that there was not a single mention of withdrawing its troops from Ukraine on the Russian side. Whatever Russia proposed effectively meant a full-scale occupation and Bucha repeated in the whole country. The head of Russian delegation - Medinsky - publicly declared many times that he doesn’t consider Ukraine a real, sovereign country, and this is probably the fundamental problem that prevents any diplomatic resolution of the conflict, at least as long as Putin rules Russia. He simply doesn’t believe in Ukraine’s agency, even after ten years of Ukrainians proving with their blood that they are ready to defend their freedom.
