In 2016, nineteen amphorae were discovered in Tomares, Zaudín Park, located in an area of the province of Seville known as El Aljarafe.

Now, six years later, after analyzing 5,899 pieces, researchers concluded that there were approximately 53,000 coins kept in the 19 amphorae, which were buried in a hidden storage area within a Roman villa, and that they were all minted between the years 294 and 311 AD.

So someone messaged me privately and asked how absolute this is.. like would we block an instance calling for genocide. I feel my response is import to reiterate here, so here it is:

Its not just about the authorities, it is about the people whose lives are at risk by that call to genocide having the right to see those posts and use that information to look out for their own safety... If someone is doxed, they should know, if someone is threatened, they should know, and they should be able to take action.

Someone saying violent things online doesnt guarantee some police officer will meander by and take them down. The law only tends to get involved once someone is reported, and sometimes not even then. No one will be reporting a site if no one can see or know it is there.

The question is, if someone is being physically threatened and having their life in jeopardy how are you helping them by blocking the privileges of the **victim** and disallowing the victim the right to see the threat placed against them?

In short, I refuse to take away rights from the victim simply because there is a violent bad actor out there. If the victim doesn't want to see it they simply need to import the block list and the problem is solved for them, so why not keep the power in the victims hands?

Is free trade really good for growth? Is it good for both industrialized and non-industrialized countries? Although the profession would lean towards saying that free trade is always good for growth, for all types of countries, my job market paper shows that free trade has actually been detrimental for growth in non-industrialized countries and only beneficial for industrialized ones 😨. I really enjoyed this paper from @mathoyos questioning the orthodoxy on trade – showing that tariff liberalisation only leads to growth for manufacturer countries.

My first thought was "sure, but the non-manufacturer countries benefit by consuming more/cheaper imports"... well he addressed that too! (see screenshot)

#introduction Hello! Let's try this place out.

I'm a population ecologist. My research focuses on understanding patterns of variability over time & space.

I study mast-seeding patterns in trees 🌲 from individuals to continental & global scales, dynamics of seed consumers, & how climate change affects tree reproduction.

I do also some urban ecology work, because urban areas are a mosaic of different land use types. This affects habitat suitability, my lab focuses on tree cavity availability.

I like that I was able to go back to "Publish" in the official iOS and Android apps. It may be less whimsical, and less branded, but after using the platform for such a long time, I'm perfectly happy with a button that just describes what it will do without trying to be cute (not that I dislike cute, I'd never part with our elephant illustrations). I have seen enough "Dr. Doom toots as he pleases" quotes in the first two years of Mastodon to last me a lifetime.
