@Empiricism@scicomm.xyz perhaps these points could have been more clearly stated at the outset. Thanks.

I've created a new visualization to better compare the losses of #Arctic sea ice volume at the annual minimum and annual maximum times of year. I'll update this seasonally at: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-fi.

Who emits how much CO2 on this planet?

The answer to this question is summarise in the figure below that was published here: nature.com/articles/s41893-021

Quoting: "We show that the per capita carbon footprints can reach several hundred tons of CO2 per year, while the majority of people living below poverty lines have yearly carbon footprints of less than 1 tCO2."

In summary, the 10% top emitters contribute about 50% of global CO2 emissions.

@Empiricism@scicomm.xyz So why accept the scientific consensus on why the planet is warming but disregard the consensus that burning of fossil fuels must stop all the while saying we need do nothing at all. It seems ‘well-established science’ is correct only when it fits your agenda.

Conservatives are both a smaller percentage of Canadian society and lack the institutional advantages the American system stacks the deck for Republicans with. Southern rural states have a veto over the progressive majority due to the electoral college and a senate system divorced from population.

The fury of our rural conservative provinces is that they don't have the politically engineered veto over social evolution that their rural American cousins do and consider that grotesquely unfair.

@Empiricism@scicomm.xyz Citing experts is the usual method by which one substantiates one’s work. Following expert advice seems preferable and wiser than going with the opinions of random people on the internet. If the natural carbon cycle were able to handle the unnatural emissions from human activity the global climate would not be warming. Your opinions seem confused since on the one hand you say we need do nothing and on the other you say off course we need to stop burning stuff ASAP. 🤔

Today I learned that it’s World Kindness Day.

Such a lovely thing to celebrate.

Such a shame that it’s only one day a year—and that there’s a real need to remind people to practice a core ethical value.

@Empiricism@scicomm.xyz
Definitely not what experts are saying -
"Time is no longer running out to act on climate change; it’s up, and the global economy is at a crossroads. But, if the world acts now to rapidly achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century, the transformation of the economy would set the world up for stronger economic growth by 2070.

Such a transformation could increase the size of the world economy by $43 trillion in net present value terms from 2021-2070. Not acting now is projected to cost the world economy $178 trillion in net present value terms from 2021-2070"

These two things don't quite go together...

From Joe Biden's speech at #COP27: "Let's reach out and take the future in our hands and make the world we wish to see, that we need to protect for generations to come."

One week earlier, from a White House briefing: “Under President Biden, oil and natural gas production has increased, and we are on track to hit the highest production in our country’s history next year.”

Wait, what??

Given the ongoing Twitter mess, I’m mirroring on Mastodon and starting a Substack with blog posts, podcasts, tweets, and commentary. First up: the @globeandmail@twitter.com justifiable concerns with Bill C-18 and CRTC overreach into non-broadcast news organizations.
