I think Twitter imploding could be a good thing because some of y'all have 20k+ followers and are also consistently the meanest people I've seen in my life

The thing that’s amazing about Elon Musk’s Twitter is he's handled it worse than my wildest expectations.

Like when he announced he was buying it, I thought I was going to have to quit out of some hard-to-convey sense of moral unease, like the way I quit Facebook.

Instead, it's like he coated himself in SpaceX jet fuel, crashed his Tesla right into Twitter HQ, then stumbled out of the wreckage to light everything he touches on fire.

All while shouting: "The Holocaust never happened!"

Climate Rage

I wrote this three years ago but had been stewing on it for at least a decade before and honestly I can't believe so many people *still* view having EMOTIONS or a sense of urgency about the climate crisis as some sort of marker that you're not a serious person. popula.com/2019/08/19/the-case

In case you missed it, the Arizona governor's race has been called for Katie Hobbs.

I refreshed the NY Times election page all day today waiting for Kari Lake to lose.

🎉 🥳

What a relief.

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

Hi all! It's time for tonight's #GoodblueSmile.

Things got a little busy today so I'm going to rely on my YouTube history for tonight's pick-me-up. 😀

Here's another great evening laugh if you need one tonight. It's from our neighbors up north. When they start to eat the dip, I always lose it!

Have a great night!

Holiday artichoke dip goes terribly wrong on-air

Haha ex-Twitter employees have created their own Mastodon instance 😅

Shout out 🏆 to @tchambers of #indieweb, whose generous boosting of others is a more humane algorithm. Following him has been responsible for a bunch of my home feed, connecting me with friends old and new.

It won't be the old network, and on this network, humans are both the algorithm and the dopamine.

Remember: boosts on here help people find their people. #boost

Dear Twitter ex-pats. When we all flounced out of Twitter loudly proclaiming we were going to Mastodon this sent a message to trolls, nazis that they could set up servers & come here.

If anyone gets harrassed with hatespeech pls note that that is not the culture of Mastodon. Please report & block those users. If you notice a pattern from the same weird domain, block that domain, write a post of the server name w/ a hashtag fediblock so your server admin can follow up & block it for everyone.

New America did a really interesting study on Parler's role in fomenting the "Stop the Steal" movement, radicalizing Trump supporters; agitating around the need for action; helping coordinate and build anticipation for January 6; and finally to broadcast the riot in real time. newamerica.org/future-frontlin

With a pretty brazen antisemite now at the helm, seemingly with a good amount of capital to inject into it, this could get worse!

You have got to be kidding me. Is this from the Onion? Or SNL? Have we time-slipped somehow into a Monty Python episode?

Next year's UN climate conference, #COP28, will take place in Dubai, epicenter of the United Arab Emirates, one of the world's largest oil producers!

It's like they've totally given up pretending that it's about saving the planet. Why not just come out and admit it's a fossil fuel gala?

Although we know early Mars was wetter, warmer and more habitable than the freeze-dried desert world of today, researchers have yet to find any direct proof that life of any kind ever graced the Martian surface.

If Mars did once host life, key questions remain: How did such life impact the planet, and where could we find evidence for its past existence?

Life may in fact be its own worst enemy on worlds throughout the cosmos. scientificamerican.com/article

I’m dismayed by the amount of post-election reporting that focuses on tactics (blunders, maneuvering, infighting), to explain the “surprising,” “improbable” Democratic success. The “surprise” framing absolves the political press from guilt for swallowing a red wave propaganda campaign from GOP operatives and pollers.

And what if Republicans did badly because voters don’t want what they’re selling? Maybe policy choices matter.

@EJDionne does much better:
