Yesterdays's *daily* migration to Mastodon was a record.

The picture doesn't capture fully what happened in the 24 hour period after Musk's 'hardcore' deadline. In that particular 24hour period there were 240 thousand registrations!

A few weeks ago, back in October and prior to Musk being in charge of Twitter, there were only a few thousand daily registrations to Mastodon.

Mastodon is different. It's polite and friendly. There's a different code of conduct (look up some of the basics), a slower pace. It's not a sprawling, hectic shopping centre in a grim industrial park on the city rim; it's a pleasant village street with artisanal shops and cafes. Take your time. Be nice.

It's hard to overstate how much fuel the failure of the DOJ to hold the former WH occupant accountable for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection & theft of classified documents (among others) causes the MAGA crowd to aggressively assert he's done nothing wrong. That is: No charges=No Crimes.

Edition 003 of The Polycrisis newsletter is out. It’s about COP27, of course.

But it’s really about: 1) climate finance is a north-south issue so it’s more about cost of capital than defining assets and aligning flows. 2) the economic advantage of RES means we can stop conceptualising collective action as the core problem of international action on cutting emissions. It’s domestic political economy that matters. phenomenalworld.org/analysis/c

Eventually the entire petrol/gasoline sector will be stranded. Just like coal fired power plants they won’t suddenly stop, however, but will become less and less economic to operate, prompting calls for govt bailouts, buybacks, fights over remediation (those stations are very polluting), and no doubt lots of dumb recrimination. All very foreseeable. twitter.com/daveregrets/status

Through the burning of fossil fuels, humans have released more carbon into the atmosphere than is contained in all of the plants currently living on Earth.

More than half of this has occurred since 1990.

We are transforming the Earth and the atmosphere on a truly massive scale.

Reforestation, and other natural solutions, will never match the scale of the problem without substantial emissions reductions.

So far, it seems that #COP27 is an even bigger failure than COP26:
💀 25% more fossil fuel lobbyists than COP26 - the largest delegate group
💀 best outcome might be avoiding backslide from COP26
💀 even weaker language on ending fossil fuel subsidies
💀 sponsored by Coca Cola

"Unfortunately, we are the asteroid, headed for life on Earth. We have been snuffing out species while cultivating monocultures, keeping chickens in cages. We are still in collective denial about our current and impending impact on life on this planet.

Our large human brains that mean we can do science, also mean we can take down the biosphere with our own species."
