The number of delegates with links to fossil fuels at the UN #climate summit has jumped 25% from the last meeting, analysis shared with the BBC shows.
Campaign group Global Witness found more than 600 people at the #COP27 talks in Egypt are linked to fossil fuels.
That's more than the combined delegations from the 10 most climate-impacted countries.

Instead of a red wave, there was a “green wave” in the U.S. election, as one environmental advocate puts it. This included Democrats taking complete control of state government in four states.
Ice loss from Northeastern Greenland significantly underestimated!

Communicating climate science via analogies is an ongoing series of blog posts created by two members of the Skeptical Science team, Evan (text) and jg (graphics).
The latest article is an updated version of analogy #9 "The greenhouse effect is a stack of blankets":
A few blankets over your body are a good thing on a cool night. They keep you warm and happy. More blankets and you sweat. Many more blankets and you ... You get the idea.

@Teri_Kanefield In the three days I have been here I have seen more content such as this than I would see in a year on Twitter. I am very glad to find you here and become more and more convinced that you are exactly right - time to cut the bird loose. This is the future if I am going to remain on social media. Thank you.
I'm a brand new Mastodon user.
Earlier I promised a more thought out explanation on why it seems to me that the Mastodon model can cure the worst evils of social media and creating a genuine and workable public sphere.
A draft is here:

It's a draft because there is SO much I don't know.
Here is a great thread on how to handle this: https://mastodon.social/@ifixcoinops/109311990514936150
New from me: Twitter has spent much of Wednesday battling a wave of blue-check verified impostor accounts posing as Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, LeBron James and even Nintendo — just hours after Twitter launched its paid verification feature https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/09/tech/twitter-impersonators-paid-verification/index.html
It's time for your evening read, friends.
Mastodon and the fediverse have existed for years. For those who were here long before it's popularity skyrocketed, it's been a mix of emotions watching it grow.
This is a really enlightening read and the best thing I read all day. Please take a moment to give it a read yourself.
Home invasion: Mastodon's Eternal September begins
I have given one man immense power over my social media life:
Nope, not the wealthiest man in the world! But Ruud Schilders is doing a wealth of good running mastodon.world with good equipment and policies.
I hope my WSJ Mastodon guide helps people understand this community and the role trust + information plays in picking a server.
This really means a fringe case has blocked its own users from following/engaging with users of journa.host because the site manager has a chip on his shoulder. Not worth anyone's time to worry about it
@captain @adamdavidson @mathewi it seems this list would be a great block list.
Early autumn sea surface temperature rankings from ERA5 courtesy of World Climate Service shows nearly all of the north Pacific Ocean from Kamchatka to North America was unusually warm, with record warm #sst (compared to the past 60 years) south of the Aleutians and off the British Columbia coast.Bering and Chukchi Seas mostly near to above average sea surface temps but not dramatically so. #akwx
Yet, like with the subprime mortgage crisis, Wall Street continues to fan the flames, this time, by pouring billions of dollars every year into risky fossil fuels. Despite having made public "net-zero by 2050" commitments, in 2021 six US banks provided $63.9 billion in financing to companies that are rapidly expanding coal, oil & gas operations. This is disastrous for the long-term health of our economy & our planet
The large North East Greenland Ice Stream is speeding up. It is accelerating at the front, it is accelerating in the back, and also in between. Changes to #NEGIS is important for #SeaLevelRise because it is a large part of the #Greenland mass budget.
