Okay this might be a long post :blob_grinning_sweat:

One thing that I realised is making harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.

With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe :sad_cat:) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the , you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

### Useful tools & resources:
[Twitodon](twitodon.com/) - Find your Twitter friends on Mastodon
[FediFinder](fedifinder.glitch.me/)- Similar to Twitodon
[Fedi Tips](fedi.tips/) - an informal, unofficial guide for non-technical people who want to use Mastodon and the wider Fediverse
[Fedi Directory](fedi.directory) - A human-curated small selection of accounts to spice up your timeline.
[Trunk](communitywiki.org/trunk) -Trunk allows you to mass-follow a bunch of people in order to get started with Mastodon or any other platform on the Fediverse
[Fediverse.info](fediverse.info/explore/people) -growing list of people and topics can help you discover mutual interests with people around the world
**Mobile Apps:**
[Metatext for iOS :apple_inc:](apps.apple.com/us/app/metatext)
[Tusky for Android :android:](play.google.com/store/apps/det)

Lastly if you are interested in setting up your own instance you can learn via learnfoss.org/ its completely free and its made by the wonderful @stux

I apologize for the long post lol, just hope this helps anyones transition over :ablobsmilehappy:

In recent years, we became too comfortable letting #Twitter define journalism & media. Algorithms often dictated the narratives we collectively paid attention to.

Absurd trends were covered by news outlets & ballooned into major stories while we missed so much real substance. And the quick takes of uninformed politicians & bad actors were forced upon anyone participating in the network.

It was bad for democracy. The #Mastodon model makes me hopeful we can do better. #twittermigration

When I first joined Twitter, it took me several tries and some effort to understand how to use and enjoy it. Mastodon will be the same for most. It certainly was for me.

The thing that makes Mastodon a great place is the people. Part of the reason is that it's been a refuge for people marginalized by society and networks like Twitter.

Try to observe and respect the norms, which include respecting each other, using CW, and adding media descriptions to be a good #a11y.

@albinokid

Tip 1: Use hashtags. There's no algorithm to suggest followers or shove posts into your feed in the hopes you follow someone.

Tip 2: Boost (re-post) toots liberally. *You* are the algorithm.

Tip 3: Use CW (content warnings / content wrappers) to discuss politics, the meta.

Tip 4: To create "threads", make the first post public and each reply "unlisted" to prevent clogging up your instance's feed.

Tip 5: Provide text descriptions, even just basic ones, when attaching photos or media.

Tip 6: Use the "report" features for moderating trolls so your admins can take action.

In 1938, Guy Callendar was the first person to use observations of temperature from across the world to demonstrate that the land areas were warming.

He also collated CO2 measurements to show that atmospheric CO2 levels were increasing.

And he also showed that the expected warming from the increase in CO2 was at least half of the observed warming.

The theory was understood much earlier, but this was the first attribution of observed climate change.

There is still lots of useful information on the birdy side, and I’m not sure who has migrated yet.

This photo was shared today by @ScottDuncanWX on Twitter: a shocking image of the extreme warmth in October. Multiple countries recorded their warmest October on record, some by large margin.

🔴 = warmer than average
🔵 = cooler than average

Wake up world; we need a healthy, livable planet!

I made a (stupid 🙃) error on the daily growth of users on Twitter. Here is the correct Monday version of my plot. Mastodon is growing slower than Twitter but is catching up. I got caught up in the excitement 🤦‍♂️.

What is going on right now: Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, has taken the stand in his own defense against a charge of seditious conspiracy.

I'm following @KlasfeldReports. who is reporting from the court.

I am following him on Twitter because I'm still figuring out how Mastodon works :)

Anyway, here is some background:

On January 13, Rhodes (who helped lead the attack on the Capitol on January 6) was indicted for, among other things, seditious conspiracy.

By way of #introduction, here is an animation of the #ocean circulation I made using model output from my college Harper Simmons.

The quantity shown is the sea surface height gradient magnitude, which is related to the current speed.

You can see the large-scale currents like the Gulf Stream, turbulent eddies, tides (the rapid flashing) and small-scale internal waves radiated from topography (the washboard patterns).

A quick glimpse into things I work on!
