Hey, people (like me) moving to #Mastodon from #Twitter! If you've set up automatic crossposting from Twitter to here, please consider turning it off. I don't think it works well; formatting often looks odd, but also as you can't really engage, because replies don't end up on Twitter. But mainly because I think it's disrespectful to the Mastodon community; almost as if you can't be bothered to engage here. If you've got something to say here, say it *here*. That's my strong suggestion!

When following back people here, I’m noticing a lot of people haven’t posted anything yet.

If you can’t think of anything to write just yet, then do consider just reblogging (=retweeting!) good content that you see around. You could start with this post, for example, to encourage more people to start sharing content around here.

BTW, as we get the Bylines publications going on here, that will provide ample good news content for the community. 👍👍

I was to contribute a scientist's expert statement today at the trial of a person who glued him/herself to a road in protest of the lack of climate protection. But: The judge didn't allow it, deeming it unnecessary, I was told. So it isn't happening.

I would not have testified that climate heating is real. We know that. I'd have testified, as a scientist, as to why, analytically, based on the findings of science, we have more than a climate problem, we're in: a climate emergency.

I have a monthly 'climate viz of the month' blog that I just started at zacklabe.com/climate-viz-of-th. October's graphic will be coming next week.

Here's an archive of a few others from earlier this year zacklabe.com/blog-archive-2022. #dataviz #OpenScience #climate #weather #python

The remnants of #Nicole will pass by the #DC area and #MidAtlantic Friday.

Since we're on the east side of the system traveling up the Appalachians, a few tornadoes are possible in a high shear environment, in addition to waves of briefly heavy rain.

Young people care about democracy, even when prices are up. We know markets cycle. We aren’t stupid and understand that a loss of rights and democracy is not a good trade off for cheaper gas.

"Sea Levels Might Rise Much Faster Than Thought"

Greenland's largest ice sheet is thawing at a much higher rate than expected, a new study has revealed, suggesting it will add six times more water to the rising sea levels than previously thought. And the trend may not be limited to Greenland, scientists worry.

A tale of two convoys exposes Canada’s divisions.
Whatever the findings of the inquiry commission in relation to the federal government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act, reality cannot be reconciled with the Convoy reality. My latest op-ed.. #POEC

By 2028, Millennials & Gen Z will dominate U.S. elections. This is why the GOP is pulling out all the stops to entrench their power. They know they don't stand a chance against a multi-racial, progressive generation of young people that will make their backwards ideas irrelevant.

There are a couple of reasons why @ElonMusk tweeting memes featuring Nazis is not only reprehensible, but insanely irresponsible.

I mean, his gaff, his rules, but while there's still the opportunity to call shit out, we should be obligated to take it. 🧵

NOTE: Republicans have not yet won a majority in the House.

It could happen and more races have been called for Republicans.

But Democrats also have a chance.

Votes are still being counted.

The number of delegates with links to fossil fuels at the UN #climate summit has jumped 25% from the last meeting, analysis shared with the BBC shows.
Campaign group Global Witness found more than 600 people at the #COP27 talks in Egypt are linked to fossil fuels.
That's more than the combined delegations from the 10 most climate-impacted countries.

Instead of a red wave, there was a “green wave” in the U.S. election, as one environmental advocate puts it. This included Democrats taking complete control of state government in four states.

Communicating climate science via analogies is an ongoing series of blog posts created by two members of the Skeptical Science team, Evan (text) and jg (graphics).

The latest article is an updated version of analogy #9 "The greenhouse effect is a stack of blankets":

A few blankets over your body are a good thing on a cool night. They keep you warm and happy. More blankets and you sweat. Many more blankets and you ... You get the idea.
