So far, 27 years of COP meetings have been a complete failure; you can't argue with physics. Anyone saying otherwise has fossil fuels or books to sell. #EmergencyMode

7.8% of the Earth's surface has had a record warm average temperature from January through October, including most of Western Europe and parts of China and Central Asia.
Nowhere has had a record low 10-month average.
The thing that bugs me about the “is 1.5C still achievable or is it 2C or 1.5C w/ overshoot” #climate conversation is that no matter what the answer turns out to be, it changes exactly NOTHING about the things the world needs to do to drastically cut emissions in the next 1-5 years, and we need WAY more action across all sectors. (Including #food and #agriculture!)

Morning folks, time for my first Mastodon thread (!)
Ahead of the #midterms tomorrow, I want to talk about the tragic politicisation of science in the US.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the Republicans became the anti-science party, but the process probably began in the 1980s, when the Christian right first emerged as a major force in conservative American politics.
Since then, the journey has been smooth and swift, and there is now a stunning partisan divide on confidence in science 😥
Excess death rates were already higher among Republicans before vaccines came online, possibly due to red states taking a more lax stance on social distancing etc, but once vaccines came on line, the gap widened dramatically 📈
And to be clear, this is after adjusting for age, so it can’t be explained by Republicans simply being older on average. This is the result of a party and its voters turning away from science

Citizen science is a valuable tool for climate science, and many other disciplines.
Currently, volunteers are transcribing detailed weather observations that were written in ship logs on voyages around the world in the 1860s, and turning the hand-written measurements into digital data.
This data will help us better reconstruct past changes in climate. #WeatherRescue
And, anyone can help!
In 2007 Ljubljana's mayor moved to make the city center car-free.
Since then:
- Driving share of city trips ⬇️ from 58% to 39%
- Walking share of trips ⬆️ from 19% to 35%
- Air pollution ⬇️ 70%
Now 97% of residents want city center to remain car-free

@ianlivingston @lauragreen yeah intentional design decision from what I understand. There's a bit more of an explainer here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/07/cage-the-mastodon/
It’s clear what the world needs to do across all economic sectors to mitigate #climate change—we’re just not doing enough of it yet. “How can we scale these mitigation solutions up, fast” is a much more interesting and necessary conversation IMHO than “is 1.5C still possible or is it actually XYZ.” #ActOnClimate #COP27

A talking point right now among pundits is that Trump will run for reelection to inoculate himself from prosecution.
I don't believe Trump actually thinks he'll innoculate himself from prosecution by declaring himself a candidate.
I believe it's a way to keep himself at the center stage of the GOP by presenting himself as the target of left-wing radical hated.
It will be his rallying cry. A way to eclipse DeSantis. A way to keep the donations flowing in.
@fleker @blaine Have you seen any nazi stuff on the federated timeline? Exactly.
There's a whole 4chan-like fediverse out there but you won't see it from this part because volunteer admins are quietly doing the right thing.
Remember there's no profit motive in running an instance, people who do it are trying to build communities and provide a service to said communities. They care
