“I think that ‘1.5 is still alive’ is a form of hopium”—a portmanteau for false hope—“and I think hopium is very dangerous,” said Peter Kalmus, a NASA climate scientist and activist who signed the letter.

I do not personally feel that human extinction is likely, but I do feel we are currently on a highway to messy civilizational collapse and a long dark ages, and the key to getting off this highway is to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and ramp it down quickly. #EmergencyMode

I find myself in the same position I was in during the early days of the birdsite, wondering what to post. Don’t want to be political or polemical in these early days, but mustn’t be too bland either. Not going to show you the scones I baked, share my latte art or describe my sourdough starter. Nor should I plug my current productions just yet. Easy enough to know what we don’t want Mastodon to be …

… anyway, that’s my current thinking

Just woke up and learned about #fedified. I literally work at my day job on technology to aid verification of sources and let me tell you: it seems like a pretty big hack of a project that misses the point. Basically you have to trust the humans who run that site. What we actually need is buy-in from organizations to provide rel=me linkbacks to their various representatives. And for unaffiliated people who want verification, you add it to your website. That's it. We already have it on Mastodon

@Saupreiss
No, I don't trust policy makers at all. I expect them to move the goalposts farther back again.

As it becomes very clear that 1.5°C above baseline is inevitable and might be only 5-10 years away, we'll soon begin hearing about 2°C being the optimal target, and 2.5°C the new ceiling we must not surpass.

It's a dangerous game to play, but it's the only way for them to pretend things are under control for as long as possible. They'll do anything necessary to avoid a system change, which us what we really need.

"A new report suggests that, far from being alarmist, the real social and economic dangers of the climate emergency are outside of boundaries of traditional climate science."

I was using Crossover as a way to mirror what I did on Twitter over onto Mastodon but now I feel I want to separate the two sites. They are very different and what might be suitable on Twitter doesn’t always feel appropriate on here so I’ve stopped. #TwitterMigration

Using this platform made me realise how I came to accept exposure to cruelty & hostility as part of the deal of being able to talk to you. The clicks algorithm is not necessarily our connection master. How refreshing to be reminded of that.

Are concerns about climate change in decline?

The report finds that since 2019 the world, in general, has become less concerned about climate change. Here, concern has dropped by 1.5 percent to 48.7 percent.
