Very sad, just received notice that an #EMT provider's life was just lost while responding to a #911 call in #Georgia Another vehicle hit the ambulance, killing Gina Ayres 57 and injuring her partner #paramedic Kristi Adams

Please people if you see an #ambulance coming, slow down (ideally pull over) and wait for us to pass you! And stop at intersections #911 has right of way when we use our #airhorn #sirens #lights!

I can answer that one! First, the followed posts show up on the server's 'federated' timeline, so blocking is a way of curating that timeline. Second, it exposes the users to abusive interactions from the would-be blocked server. This is social media -- not a RSS feed. Users don't just get messages about what they follow, they get messages from anybody in the network who wants to send them one.

@digiphile @mathewi Some people/instances want to publicize their activity and will welcome journalists (mstdn.science, genome.social, etc.). Other people just want a more private experience. My main concern with these 'more private' instances is that people may act as though they really are private and expose themselves to reputational or even legal harm -- while assuming that by blocking some journalists they have eliminated that risk, when they've only reduced it by a tiny amount (if at all).

@bobwyman @larsjohannes @digiphile @mathewi
If you want users to have complete control, there are servers that do so (check out my instance, qoto.org). If you want the underlying algorithm to give all control to the user, then you need to abandon the instance/group-server all together. Some people are trying that, but it's not technically trivial (e.g. revolver from freespeechextremist.net)

@frayoshi @trinsec @freemo I looked at the mograph blocklist and see that QOTO is off-limits because it federates with sites that mograph doesn't like. Do you know why that matters to them? Are they concerned that discussions involving mograph users would be visible to those other sites?

@BlackAzizAnansi Or in other words, break their monopolies and just get them off our backs.

#Introduction

Hi! I’m Tim Mak, an investigative correspondent for NPR.

Follow along if you’re interested in reading more about holding public figures and organizations accountable!

I’ve spent much of the last year in Ukraine covering the war, and I’m the author of a book on the inner workings of the NRA titled ‘Misfire.’

I’m also a surfer and former Army medic, so expect some posts on that too!

@Pineywoozle They aren't even running vote-splitting (independent/third-party) candidates. They are about as non-disruptive as any reform movement can be. If this is the extremism that you're worried about, then you don't have anything to worry about.

@davetroy As long as the institutions live up to their promises to the people, we won't have to worry about anarchists trying to burn them down.

It looks like Meta just quietly (?) rolled out a new Large Language Model trained up on the scientific literature. At first glance it's not terrible—I was thinking I had reviewed worse—but it starts talking nonsense after a while.

Still, interesting and makes me think about the research papers I'll be receiving from students in coming years.

One of the things that struck me when I first got here was how much more "geographical" the mastoverse is than other social networks. The instances looked, to my newcomer eyes, like small places, villages, or large crowded cities. With my background, I could not see any other solution than to try to draw a map of this neighborhood 😅 . The result is a little mashup between mastovue by @Luca and a network map. Interactive version here: comeetie.fr/galerie/mapstodon/ and feedbacks. #mapstdon

Hello!

I’ve seen several hashtags using variations of #MultipleSclerosis, #MS, #RRMS, #SPMS, #LifeWithMS, #MSRunner. Etc.

Can we try consolidating under #MSChat For all things #MultipleSclerosis related.

I hoping we get some of the post bird #researchers, #scientists, and #neuros in the loop.

Thank for for your past boosts of my posts and following me.

❤️Anne

Never forget that a country where people are free can become an extreme authoritarian state. Take nothing for granted. Do not listen to those who say you’re overreacting. Do not accept a world where mothers and grandmothers had more rights their daughters will have.

I get a lot of developers and entrepreneurs asking me for advice on a potential social media product.

Usually -- almost always -- I ask them: would you rather be Meta or Automattic?

At first, most of them think they want to be Meta. But then when I show them the stats on Automattic, many of them reconsider.

Sure, Meta attracts the Press.

Yet Automattic attracts good will and sustainability -- something Meta doesn't have.

Automattic is one of the most important companies on the Internet.

They make Tumblr, WooCommerce, Amismet, LongReads, WordPress—among others.

WordPress alone powers ~44% of the world's websites.

More interesting: despite being such a large, dominant company, few people hate Automattic.

Why is this? 🧵

Good morning! #Artemis is on the launch pad, the countdown is proceeding as scheduled. I’ll start covering tanking aound 3:30 PM ET (that’s the fueling of the rocket).

Is there any interest in me live-posting? I’ve found that there isn’t as much engagement with that over here as on the other site, but happy to do it over here as well if people are interested.
