@joshua_r_eyler My point is that cheating is only/mainly a problem because many opportunities in life are allocated based on grades. If education wasn't being used as a credential, then students wouldn't be as motivated to cheat and teachers wouldn't have to worry about catching it in the name of fairness/meritocracy. The lack of trust is a symptom of an overly competitive society not something that developed within the educational system itself. Maybe education is a good place to push back against that excessive competition, but I think you have to be clear about how radical it is to do so, and not present academic cheating as purely an internal issue of educational institutions.

Maybe the problem is not with bitcoin itself, but that some people (exchanges) tried to scale it far beyond what it can handle. If it aspired to replace the banking system, maybe it was meant as a first-draft proof-of-principle, rather than the optimized ubercurrency.

When I've discussed preprints in an inter-disciplinary group, the biologists were the least comfortable with abandoning peer-reviewed journals (relative to astronomers, for example) specifically because there are so many manuscripts and so many researchers that they want some system for filtering out the junk.
The arguments in the article don't depend on there being Chinese hordes or an elitist Nature-Science-Cell cabal.
