I get a lot of developers and entrepreneurs asking me for advice on a potential social media product.

Usually -- almost always -- I ask them: would you rather be Meta or Automattic?

At first, most of them think they want to be Meta. But then when I show them the stats on Automattic, many of them reconsider.

Sure, Meta attracts the Press.

Yet Automattic attracts good will and sustainability -- something Meta doesn't have.

Automattic is one of the most important companies on the Internet.

They make Tumblr, WooCommerce, Amismet, LongReads, WordPress—among others.

WordPress alone powers ~44% of the world's websites.

More interesting: despite being such a large, dominant company, few people hate Automattic.

It saddens me how poor the bivalent vaccine uptake has been in the US.

There was once a dream of a decentralised web.

As recently as a decade ago we had a still very active blogosphere, connected via blogrolls and RSS. Specialised web forums were still mainstream and messenger apps could largely interoperate.

Centralised social media slowly ate that dream. It had plenty of positives, but it pulled more and more people away from the open web and into corporate walled gardens.

Some people kept the dream of decentralisation alive. And now you are here.

Twitter might be going down. @beatty is trying to preserve the Science Twitter Graph.

Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.
