It’s very funny to me that the dominant Twentieth Century conception of AI was a slightly awkward nerd with an inhuman mastery of facts and logic, when what we actually got is smooth-talking bullshit artists who can’t do eighth-grade math.

It's International #Holocaust Remembrance Day today

I am only here because each of my grandparents survived the Holocaust with their own amazing story.

However, each of them had siblings and parents who died.

Which means most of my family died.

I toyed with the idea of posting photos of my grandparents today but, instead, here is a photo of my grandfather's sister, with whom I share a name.

Pre-war, photos were sent to family and friends who lived outside Europe - mostly to people who had immigrated to Palestine.

In the 90's and 00's my aunt undertook an epic genealogy search to find records and photos of our lost family. This is one of the photos she unearthed.

As I type this, it occurs to me that I do not know the exact details of how most of my relatives died, this great-aunt included.

Indeed, I am not sure that I want to know... And yet being able to tell their stories is so important.

I was unaware of the Stone Mountain Confederate monument until I moved to Georgia. The Atlanta History Center is telling it's story now. It's a massive carving of Davis, Lee, and Jackson on the side of Stone Mountain, which is the centerpiece of a very popular state park. It was only completed in 1972 and is surrounded by a theme park celebrating the antebellum South.

I just listened to this episode with Sophie Lewis about her recent work "Abolish the Family: A Manifesto for Care and Liberation" and got a solid overview of the topic.
