"Make no mistake. Modern submarines, especially nuclear-powered ones, are one of the most potent and effective weapon systems in today’s world. That is, until they aren’t.

"Our analysis shows they might soon be so easily detected they could become billion-dollar coffins."

Paul #Keating on the #NPC is absolutely correct that we have become subservient to the US and the UK. Aligning with #Europe would have been strategically smarter and the new (even #nuclear) submarines from France would have been far superior. We have been dudded. #AusPol
#Morrison locked us into a pretty rotten deal, $368B for 8 #Submarines, and, more importantly the #US and the #UK can use #Australia as a "Garage" (their word). We should have maintained a better relationship with #Europe, and especially #France.

Just to put things into context, for the same price as these waste of money submarines, we could buy:

- 200 Canberra-class LHDs
or
-100 Hobart-class AWDs
or
- 1000 Arafura-class OCVs
or
- pay for healthcare, social security above the poverty line, free education for all, and upgrade the NBN to 93% FTTP like the original plan

I suppose dick shaped ships are the order of the day. I'm sure it was Albo who said "let them eat cake", wasn't it?

The banks didn't fail because of wokeism- they failed because of Trumpism. Trump and GOP repealed regulations that would have 100% prevented the bank collapse. Once again Dems cleaning up the GOP's mess

Australia's National Reconstruction Fund Corporation Bill 2022 passed House of Representatives today incorporating amendements from the Greens and Independent Zoe Daniel. Further amendments from the crossbench did not pass. It needs to have Greens and crossbench support to pass in the Senate.

This is a $15 billion fund targeting local manufacturing as part of the #EnergyTransition, similar in many ways to the Inflation Reduction Act in the USA.

Strong words for us from three climate scientists, James Dyke, Wolfgang Knorr, and Robert Watson:

"Current net zero policies will not keep warming to within 1.5°C because they were never intended to. They were and still are driven by a need to protect business as usual, not the climate. If we want to keep people safe, then large and sustained cuts to carbon emissions need to happen now. That is the very simple acid test that must be applied to all climate policies. The time for wishful thinking is over."

Did the NYT really publish an Opinion speculating that young girls today are more depressed than ever because of _phones_?

In a world where they lost the right to control their own reproductive healthcare? Where states are pondering making them report their periods? In a world debating genital inspections to play school sports? While banning books? Where they practice school shooting drills? With climate change? Where sexual assault isn’t disqualifying for public office?

Sure, it’s the phones.

Rather than holding a Royal Commission into #Murdoch, Labor should revive Gillard's proposed media legislation arising from the Finkelstein Review, and let Murdoch howl about it.

@wall0159 @waitnwallflower
My story is that the corporate oligarchs, the plutocracy who already own the major political parties & most of the press, media, want to destroy our society & use the people as feudal serfs or slaves.
Not the same feudalism as before, not the same fascism as before, not the same leaders as before, but an end result where the plutocrats own the people & use them for whatever their ends may be.
I have no interest in comparing anyone with Hitler or Mussolini or Franco or Genghis Khan or Hannibal point by point, there have always been people who act in the same way as the fascists & I use the term fascist because people have an idea of what I mean when I say that.
It is not the Coalition that Labor is unable or unwilling to hold accountable, but the plutocrats.
The Coalition are just as much puppets as is Labor.

"A slam dunk for families:” Pilot launched to kick gas out of homes and communities"
reneweconomy.com.au/a-slam-dun
The bid to kick fossil gas out of Australian homes, electrify everything and power it with solar is off and running in New South Wales, with the launch of an $8 million pilot to decarbonise three local communities across the state.

According to its [Rewiring Australia's] modelling, it will be cost effective for households to entirely replace conventional gas and other outdated appliances with EV, solar and efficient alternatives by the mid-2020s.
