I’m feeling concerned that many of us have recently joined #Mastodon and that the long term visually impaired community are now inundated with beautiful photos with no #alttext to describe the photo. Only about 1 in 5 Toots describe photos on my timeline. We all need to curb our enthusiasm to share undescribed photos and embrace our descriptive writing. I’m not on my high horse just concerned that we’ve arrived en masse and need to do our very best to embrace #MastodonCulture.

Most people on Twitter enjoyed my 'challenges', where I post a figure from a scientific paper with a duplication.
* The duplication can be within a photo or across photos (overlaps).
* The papers are usually in the biomedical field, almost always peer-reviewed.
* I usually do not list the DOI or author name. It is about the challenge, not about pointing fingers.
* First to post the correct answer with and without an illustration win emoji awards.

Thinking about the adaptability of #trees today. How ancient junipers like these have flowed so differently in their centuries of growth because of pressures faced long ago, from lightning strikes and buckling winds to storms lifting them partially out of the earth. The resilience needed to remake the arrangement, counterbalancing a suddenly altered centre of gravity or reshooting from a shattered, fire-scorched crown. The stories of endurance held by the heartwood.

So i tried posting an ad on twitter for QOTO just for shits and giggles and see what sort of conversion we get... Astonishingly we have a 11% engagement rate... that is absolutely unheard of in advertising. Normally its <1%... Not sure if ill continue advertising or not but it was an interesting experience to say the least.

But evolution is not linear. It branches and branches. Divides in some places and recombines in others. #science

There are 16 cameras on the #NASA Orion Capsule including one on each of the four solar panel wings.

Some can record in 4K quality and will give us an amazing view of the upcoming flyby of the Moon on November 21st.

After coming within 100 km of the Moon, #Orion will go farther than any human-rated spacecraft has gone, then do another flyby of the Moon.

Then it'll return to Earth on December 11th, landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego.

I baked some biscuits since I did such a bad-ass hike today. A girl needs carbs with soup!

#BakingTip: Never twist when cutting biscuits — cut straight down & out; Square biscuits are easier to do well.

Never touch the sides or they flop over because you seal the layers.

Baking them on a pizza stone creates incredible caramelized crust.

I added cheese, but don’t add too much or it seals the sides/flops over or prevents max height.

Yuzu koshou is done: fresh yuzu was zested, juiced and all the peel was pulped in blender. Green chilli from our garden in Fukushima: deseeded and pulped. Salt added. In the fridge now to ferment for a few days. However, it tastes awesome now. Which is a problem. Cos it's addictive:-) #cooking #food #japan
