I don’t post in German much. I read and understand spoken German fairly well and speak conversational German well enough to get by in person. I struggle to write in German because my grammar is atrocious. I’m working on it though.

As to why I learned German, some of my ancestors were German, Danish and Dutch, and German was one of the languages taught in my school. I thought it would be nice connection to my family, and I spent a year in Germany after graduation.

Learning German has helped me learn other languages. It is better than my French or Spanish, but I may never have learned those if I hadn’t learned German first.

It works both ways for me. Of course, I’m mentally translating the German, so I might miss nuance.

This waterfall in the remote, resettled community of Grand Bruit, #NewfoundlandLabrador was not making a “big noise” when we were there in the summer of 2019. It’s right in the centre of the village with a foot bridge to get from one side to the other. There are no roads, only paths for walkers & ATVs. The community was resettled in 2010. #Newfoundland #WaterfallWednesday

I bet octopuses think bones are horrific. I bet all their cosmic horror stories involve rigid-limbs and hinged joints.

#waterfallwednesday Watkins Glen State Park in western #NY has a slot canyon with many gorges and waterfalls. Here are two of my favorites, alongside a stunning pedestrian bridge. This park is a must visit.

These are my cats, Bobbea and Diana. Bobbea is the mother, and Diana is one of her litter of eight babies. Bobbea found me last February. I took her in and looked for her home, but never found anyone looking for her. A neighbor said he had seen her in the sewer pipe in back of our building. I decided to keep her and found out she was pregnant. In April she had eight kittens. I helped deliver them . I found wonderful homes for seven of them and I kept Diana. #CatsofMastodon #cats
