#rant

#niceness vs #kindness:

Niceness is the set of rules us white people established and force on everyone else, allowing us to punish anyone not seen as "nice" (as in, not playing by our shitty rules).

Kindness is giving a damn about other people and acting accordingly; kindness is sometimes speaking out but also sometimes shutting up. Kindness does not force others to submit to a set of arbitrary rules that favor white people.

I don't want a nice #Mastodon, I'd like a kind one.

@peepstein

They might be giving you grace because they think you will be more circumspect on Mastodon.

I'm fascinated by how often people seek niceness in their social media experiences.

The inability to tolerate discomfort is a hallmark of the dominant culture.

I seek realness, and often that is an extension of what's happening in the real world.

Currently the real world is not entirely a nice place.

Is anyone else looking forward to reading the DOJ's reply brief in Trump's special master case? 🤓 (It's due today)

Are medium sized (smaller) instances with good reputations, fast processors, and general broad focus.

Your instance is known to be very slow because of size.

@serenebabe

mastodon.social actually wants people to move because instances aren't supposed to be so big. It let's people join anyway because people need somewhere to land when first joining Mastodon.

You seem like a good candidate for an activist instance.

Free #advice:

If someone promotes #cryptocurrencies and they're equivocal or vague about #regulation and #oversight, they're probably trying to #scam you.

On the other hand, if someone promotes cryptocurrencies and they're forthright and in favour of regulation and oversight, they're probably trying to scam you.

Anyone can skydive once. Those who survive and twice are truly special.

I think it's glorious that there's now a Mastodon server operated by people who used to work for Twitter (macaw.social). I could have never imagined it when I started in 2016.

I feel bad for engineers who are saying “I built this” and some chud with a nerd army replies “I own this”.

I think I'm going to appreciate the content warnings on here more and more the closer we get to 2024.
