@piggo that's why I welcome efforts like . I mean, it can be badly drafted, maybe executed, most likely it will fail, no problem with that, but eventually something in that direction sounds like a useful thing for the users.

@piggo Well, I understand you run your own instance, so it's your personal choice. But if you do the same when you have thousands of users at your instance, you are effectively preventing ALL of them to interact with the other one. What right do you have to do that? I mean, if the rules clearly state that that you are the dictator there, I am fine with that. But most of the time it's not the case. And then 2 things happen:
1. you feel good about yourself because you won the game; and
2. your users end up shafted.

As a born guerrilla fighter, I see a potential for an uprising of users against admins here. :blobthinking:

I got interested in this stuff lately and it makes my brain hurt and heart sink. What a drama on all sides.

I think it's a great example of silly games and feuds at the expense of users of these instances. An admin A does not like admin B and that is the reason for blocking thousands of users of B's instance from thousands of users of A. And that we call "moderation", right? Nice! (mind you, if B's users are ugly people in A's userbase opinion _en masse_, that's another story)

I even read from somebody that all what is wrong with an instance is that its users tend to be mildly annoying and that's a good reason to defederate the instance (witches.live/@anna/10948021759). Lovely. And that's how we want to become a better alternative to corporate social networks? Good luck boys and girls in the world! This way you only lose trust of us, the normal users of this network.

🤦‍♂️

Sincerely yours,

"Annoying reply guy"

> flagrant bigotry as the bar for intervening to protect vulnerable people from a poorly run instance

re: Meta, kudos to those leaving UFOI

@josh

Just a curious user here: may I ask for arguments or references to that "dangerous approach" you mention? I tried to read the paper, but do not see what you might mean. (no worries, I am not in this for a flamewar, I am just trying to understand this fun you guys have apparently)

Also, let me remind you that anybody thinking the admin is not right in the head does not warrant the whole community to be shunned - as seems to be happening lately.

@abby @ufoi

@Darkayne @rootadmin @realcaseyrollins

After all, this all is about a simple thing: qoto.org was excluded (blocked) for no good reason (many here think) and our admin is doing his utmost for us to "belong again". Searching for some dark intentions behind is pointless. And he chose a way to put a finger on some real harmful phenomenon out there and tried to right the wrong. People might disagree with it, that is alright, but to imply a negative judgement about the whole community because of that is just silly. What's so difficult to understand about it?

@Darkayne @rootadmin @realcaseyrollins Totally agree.

Guys, think about the whole community when you discuss this. An admin being an idiot in your judgement does not make a good case for silencing the whole community. After all, all admins, whatever we think of them, should be applauded for what they do for their users. And mind you, at qoto.org, you might not like the guy, but he's doing his tech job well plus, does not even ask for contributions from the community. And he should be thanked for that - regardless of what anybody thinks about him as a person.

@rootadmin @Darkayne @realcaseyrollins

Now what I am totally flabbergasted by is that admins have a run of their life with this, but in the end their feuds lead to negative consequences for me as a user.

That somebody doesn't like admin of my instance is a beautiful argument for blocking the entire community - without any good reason, just because somebody thinks the admin is an idiot.

Well done everybody there. Thank you. Prototypes of responsible and well-intentioned "admining".

What a mess.... There is only one solution: individual instances. Is that what we want?

@freemo

Well, glad you take it just fine.

Personally, I agree with @satan, it's your communication style which makes it "not right". While it tends to be useful and effective in tech circles, it tends to work against you in social context requiring some diplomacy and getting people on board for a common cause. I know, because I use that style myself more often than I wish sometimes.

@satan

Can you spot the circles?

It took me a long time. Once you see them, they'll seem obvious.

This is the Coffer Illusion, by Anthony Norcia

@satan In my view it's not a bad idea - I am pissed by the fact that many instances block qoto for no other reason than just they've heard rumors. As a normie user from inside I just don't get it.

So while the idea is not bad as such, unfortunately (my very subjective view) it is executed by not exactly the most suitable person (sorry freemo).

I suggest to consider the idea separately from the person behind it.

@mathias Well, my older one is 14 so it could be a thing too. Let's see. Anyway, your tips so far always worked well for me, so I'll certainly give it a shot 😉

Last thing about qoto's "you can't defederate from me" club I promise

@selea

As just a simple normal qoto user, I'd be interested in the response to @freemo's question too.

I observe this whole ufoi stuff happening and what is going through my head is this:
again and again there are these echoes of qoto being somehow nefarious/ugly instance, but I loiter qoto.org since 2 years now and I just don't get it. This is just a nice polite instance. The only thing I had to do at certain point was to mute whatever gleason*** stuff I didn't like which every now and then appeared boosted in my timeline and for the remainder it's just pleasant people all around. So I do not have a clue what people have against qoto. I do not want to start a flame, but I would love somebody from outside of qoto.org explain to me what the heck is wrong with our little community.

Personally, the only sensitive thing I see happening here is that when I open the federated timeline, I get bombarded with all sorts of stuff, not necessarily good for work environment, but I guess that is standard at most instances anyway - except for those which block everything by default and only allow few white-listed.

@malsamaxyz@veganism.social With that growth rate, soon you'll need a bigger chamber just to accommodate PvdD.
