Where I live, on a person's birthday, people congratulate their family members. I like the habit: after all, it deserves a recognition that one managed to survive all that time along the "birthday child" :-). Especially when the birthday child is a teenager 😄

@piggo theories, yada, yada, yada. Try to go without for a couple of years and then you'll see how you miss it. Or not - but you'll never really know until you really try.
Ascetic life sounds theoretically appealing, but in practice it's not a thing for the vast majority of us.
You like good food, I gather. Think about Christmas as a food for soul :-) - bah! am I getting pathetic... whatever...
