Hello everyone! I teach high school physics and math at a boarding school in Western Massachusetts. #iteachphysics

My favorite class activity-type is the lab practical, where students realize a seemingly complicated problem is absolutely achievable with what they know now. Currently: Road Runner vs. Coyote

Sad to see that it's finally time for the webOSNation forums to be shut down. I am who I am today in large part because I spent so much time in the original VisorCentral forums and cut my teeth moderating communities and tracking smartphone news before we knew they'd even be a thing. RIP to a great community meeting place, full of enthusiasm and support and kindness.

@mwlucas @virtuosew that link is from 2019 and ICAAN blocked the sale.

I keep seeing boosts of a post about how the .ORG domain was bought by a private equity firm and they're going to dramatically raise the price, but that sale was rejected by ICANN in April 2020 and the Public Interest Registry, the folks who've run .ORG since 2003, still run it. I love you all, but that post you're boosting is over three years old. You can stop boosting it now. Please. :)

On her birthday, we remember Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, one of the greats the world lost in 2022. 🖖

1/ A lot of people have been asking for an explainer on what is going on with Southwest Airlines and the massive meltdown that occurred. Hi, I'm TProphet. I write the Seat 31B travel blog (https://www.seat31b.com) and closely follow the airline industry. More importantly, I have a friend whom Southwest abandoned in Las Vegas until New Year's (along with his cat), and there was literally nothing I could do for him. Ready? Let's dive in.

Spending this beautiful sunny Sydney day, not at the beach, but rather chasing radio waves from the sky with my home made radio telescope - made from plywood, insulation sarking and olive oil cans with a few electronic bits.
These horn antennas are designed to tune into the 1.420 GHz signal, emitted by neutral hydrogen gas, when the atoms experience an electron spin flip, emitting the 21cm wavelength photon.
We can use this data to take observations over the course of 24 hours, watching the 1.420 GHz signal move back and forth as the Galaxy rolls over. Using this we can calculate Doppler shifts and work out the velocity of this gas - in other words, see the arms of the Milky Way move towards and away from us.
Good fun!

$TSLA crashing because the company is on autopilot is the most fitting end to 2022 possible

Elon Musk is growing a social network. Just not the one he expected.

New sign-ups have spiked several times on Twitter alternative Mastodon since Musk bought Twitter in October.

We were going to take the kids sledding in RMNP, but they are predicting high winds, so I spent the morning on a local hike.

Notified Experian on Dec. 23 that their site was allowing anyone to see the credit report for, well, basically anyone, completely bypassing their lame 4-5 multiple guess questions and other security.

Or even in cases (like mine) where trying to get your credit report generates an error saying you have 3 other options for getting your free report from them (calling, mailing, or chat w/ rep). The site said Experian didn't have enough info to validate my identity, but when I changed the url slightly, it showed me my entire report. Glad I checked, too, because the info in there is so completely wrong I don't even know where to start.

So it's Dec. 27, and I still haven't heard anything from Experian.

It's bad enough that we can't stop companies like from making $2B a quarter collecting and selling our info, but this has to stop. Experian has show this year especially that it gives exactly zero fscks about securing access to the data that drives its entire business.

Working most of my career in the West I’ve been involved in several investigations related to #wildfire. None felt as urgent as today’s piece on last year’s deadly Marshall Fire in Boulder County, #Colorado. That’s because we’re underestimating the changing nature of fire.
That point was made again last week, as Jen Oldham was wrapping up the piece.
We added a couple of lines: “This month, with snow on the ground and temperatures in the 40s, another blaze ignited not far from where the Marshall Fire burned. Thirty-five-mile-per-hour winds spread the flames and forced evacuations before the threat subsided.”

Poll: How many parked domains do you have without any project attached (you are just paying renewal fees)? Please boost it so that wider dev/IT community can vote it. TIA.

Still struggling so a call out to the #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing especially the #japanese computer specialists, I’m looking for some disk images for the Sharp MZ-6500 series of computers. Please boost. Thanks
