Given all the crazy happening on Twitter this morning, where Elon is shutting down free SMS Two Factor Authentification, putting it behind a paywall, it seems like a good time to post this:

This server and all Mastodon servers have built-in Two-Factor for free - and we strongly encourage everyone to enable this. Here is how.

Every now and then I hear about some useful resources that could help me a lot, but which I cannot access because they are on Instagram or Facebook.

Please please please if you are doing anything that qualifies as “public service”, please don't limit your reach to walled gardens only, please do it in at least one openly accessible place too

Unionized rail workers warned of a “ticking time bomb.”

They called out mass layoffs and overburdened workers.

They watched in horror as safety regulations were blocked.

Now toxic chemicals from Ohio's train derailment could poison the area for years.

Do you like Mastodon's default user interface? Why? Why not?

Boosts for reach appreciated.

Von wegen PalmOS ist tot. Da hat es jemand reimplementiert:

Hello Fediverse 😀
We are starting this account for Qt Project related communication, events, and many more things.

Did you know that there is a simple page that gives you the instructions to contribute to Qt? and also you can get some nice plots to see the activity on all the repositories!

Hey there. You are doing a good job.

It’s easy to beat ourselves up and worry all the time about what other people are doing, or what they think of us.

Slow down. Let things come. You have what you need.

BREAKING: Moderna says it will keep its Covid vaccine free for all people in the U.S.—reversing course on its planned 400% price increase—one day after Bernie Sanders said he would force the CEO to testify.

I am truly sorry that your timeline isn’t filled up with John Mastodon posts. Meeting with the engineers now.

Hey, folks. Big layoffs at DigitalOcean today, and my team and I were hit. In fact, so was my adjacent team, and a good chunk of my department. I don't have much reach here on Mastodon yet, but if anybody wants to discuss opportunities for a technical editor / writer / manager of same, I'm up for it.

(A)periodic reminder that the most important difference between a senior developer and a junior developer, is that that the senior developer has so many more stories to tell about embarrassing blunders they've made.

John Mastodon would never put his toots at the top of our timeline.

#Programming and #infosec Mastodon, I have questions about file identification. Say you have an unknown file and you want to determine what "kind" of file it is, similar to what the "file" command does on Unix. What's the best way to do this programmatically? Is there an open-source (non-GPL) library that dos this sort of thing? I suppose I could write my own library, reading and interpreting a "magic" file like what's used by "file". Is there a "best" magic file out there to use?

I've posted my first devlog for "Find the Story", a game I'm working on for the #arduboy FX Game Jam. This is what I was teasing back in January. community.arduboy.com/t/find-t

For any trans people who need to hear this:

Your body is beautiful. You're worthy of being desired, if that's something you want.

Whether you choose to transition (and in whatever direction you want), and wherever you are in that process -- you're seen, you are believed, and I'm proud to be your sibling.

When you look in the mirror, you deserve to hear, "Hey, Beautiful." If you don't hear it in your voice, hear it in mine.

Your strength is incredible. You come from a long tradition of transgender people, stretching back to the earliest days of humanity.

Let the haters shout into the void. You don't need to. The Void already loves you. ✨

(cis people please boost)

It feels unstoppable.

Big companies train expensive computers on your content with an explicit goal of not having to credit you, link to you, or even tell you. So search engines don't become a portal to the wider web, they become the one and only place you need to go, and monetize how they please.

It's all packaged up so that people see it and use it and go "well boy howdy that's awful neat". And it is neat. Just neat enough that no criticism of it will ever matter or effect the trajectory.

@verge So you’re saying, if all of us ex-Twitter users went back to our now dormant accounts for the sole purpose of blocking Elon Musk, that would still have a negative effect on his impressions? That would be terrible if that happened.

Looking for recommendations on sites to keep up with developer news that I can put into NNW. I have iOS Dev Weekly as well Apple, Google and AWS company blogs. What else is out there?
