Hi, I'm Aurynn. I run cloudisland.nz, an instance entirely hosted in Aotearoa New Zealand, on the Catalyst Cloud OpenStack cloud!

Cloud Island is a general-purpose instance, with a lot of really cool folks doing really cool things.

I toot mostly about cloud technology as I work on the Cloud Island infrastructure, general life, and sometimes #sociology.

I also do #photo #books sometimes!

I am transgender. Trans rights are human rights.

Welcome!

Want to teach about ethics/computing and society? We are looking to hire a teaching post doc at Georgia Tech, two-year appointment.

#BlackMastodon When I started off in engineering, I told a senior colleague that I wanted to have a career a generalist instead of specializing in one area of expertise. His response was dismissive "Jack-Of-All-Trades. Master of none."

I've since come to find out that the actual full quote is:
"Jack of all trades is master of none, but oftentimes better of a master of none."

With respect to all the specialists, don't let anybody shame you for being a generalist.

Just got laid off from BuzzFeed and I’m truly heartbroken. I have so much passion for writing and to get this news right before Christmas is truly devastating. If anyone is looking for a writer—I’m available for hire. 🙁 #tuesday

Today is Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S., a “day that will live in infamy” for the unprovoked attack by the Empire of Japan upon U.S. forces stationed in Hawaii. But it also marked a dark turning point for Japanese Americans, who overnight became the “enemy.” (1/4)

Hey everyone! I'm looking for folks who are interested in connecting their repeaters, either during nets or permanently, to the Pride Radio Network. Our network is a linked multi-mode and multi-national repeater system by and for the LGBTQIA+ community and we would love to have more repeaters throughout the world on our network. If anyone is interested in becoming an affiliate of our network, feel free to reach out. More info about our network can be found at https://prideradionetwork.com

After playing around with #gpt for a while I have decided to write a warning to my students:

So let’s see if Mastodon can be used to find jobs. Please boost for visibility! 🙏

Irina Truong is one of the best senior #Python developers I know. Her work is always outstanding and polished. She also contributes to open source: https://github.com/j-bennet. You want her in your team, trust me.

Unfortunately she was part of the 13% recently laid off by #Elastic. This is your luck! She’s now open to work: https://www.linkedin.com/in/irinatruong

Please follow @auschwitzmuseum There’s no more important way to stamp out antisemitism and racial hate than supporting the documented history of the hell it led humanity into.

😆

I don’t know who did this either 😂😂

Kevin Bates just launched his Kickstarter for the #arduboy Mini, a tiny version of his open-source console. If you get the graffiti version, you might notice my handle among those of many other community contributors! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bateske/arduboy-mini

LILIES ARE SO TOXIC TO CATS ONE SNIFF CAN KILL THEM. It triggers kidney failure. Rapid vet intervention cannot reliably save their lives.

*Never* keep true lilies (lilium) in the house if you have cats.

Make sure your family and friends know too! There's no warning at the store about the danger of lilies, so they get around in the holidays.

I'm noticing a lot of "I'm bored of Mastodon, I'm going back to #Twitter" posts.

In case they are genuine, here's what I've found works:

⚫ try to post content, not complaints. People want to engage with you, not your gripes

⚫ try to learn. If you're putting in an effort to be part of the community, the community will welcome you

⚫ Try to avoid posting links to tweets, definitely don't cross-post. People want Mastodon content

⚫ Reply! Reply! Reply! Everyone wants to know someone's reading and considering their content, even you

⚫ Don't lurk. Many of us check for a filled out profile, avatars, and posts, before we follow someone back

⚫ Chill. It's a big new world that doesn't serve everything up to you

⚫ Avoid the trap of rebuilding Twitter here

Feel free to link this post to people struggling with Mastodon. It's what I've found works, and may not work for everyone

Yay! @themagpi has landed in the Fediverse. 👋 #RaspberryPi

It's here and we're open! Mstdn.games is a new #gaming instance on #Mastodon!

It's brand new and we're excited to have #gamers from all walks of life come join us.

sign up here --> https://mstdn.games

It is our top priority that this is a safe and friendly space for everyone. We hope many find a home here. User capacity is limited in order to keep everything running smoothly, keep costs under control, and prevent bot account creation.

I just published a quick screenshot pros/cons tour of 6 different iPhone apps for Mastodon, including three currently in beta https://a.wholelottanothing.org/2022/12/04/every-mastodon-ios-app-scratches-an-itch-a-brief-tour-of-various-clients/
