I just had the worst #interview of my entire #career . It turned out to be an insightful list of precisely how NOT to attract talent. In that way, it was really useful to me as a candidate.
Presented for your amusement, here's a thread of what I asked. It's going to be a longboi, but here's my absolute favorite:
🚩 Do you have any queer peers? Is this a safe place for them to work? "We don't talk about that here."
Just thinking about how we had dozens of ideas for Twitterrific over the years that we didn't even try because we were worried they'd probably violate the Twitter TOS somehow and they'd ban us.
Instead, Twitter arbitrarily changed or redefined some rule that has yet to be identified (and might not even be published) and banned us anyway out of the blue.
They've still not said a word and I don't expect they ever will.
We're seeing a lot of posts about #ThisIsFine and that IS fine, but we're long time friends of the meme's creator KC Green. Don't forget you can get official merch from his store and support the #art and #artist so check it out!

Okay, I’m excited for this now.
Mastodon Etiquette 101
Boost what you like, do not just Favorite (like) a toot/post. It is all about lifting others up. This is not twitter.
It can take a bit of getting used to but I have found it to be a much better experience without an algorithm driven by bot likes.

For me, Twitter has already died - when it stopped working on #webOS several years ago, and again when it started being torn apart by a billionaire with issues. The grieving has been slow motion, but is already well advanced, unfortunately. It’s sad because it didn’t have to be this way, but Mastodon is everything Twitter could have been made into, and was deliberately not made into. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/01/third-party-twitter-clients-are-broken-whether-by-policy-or-glitch/

BREAKING: A bill banning all individual stock trades in Congress has been reintroduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers. The TRUST Act would force members, spouses & dependents to put many investments in a blind trust.

Whoa, cool blog post summarizing a bunch of available studies on quote tweeting behavior -- research that I was unaware existed!

No silver bullets that will end any debates here but, you know, here's some data at least

What's the best app for Windows for cloning drives that I want to be bootable?
I'm planning to upgrade the main drive on my gaming PC. I want to clone it to the new drive in an external enclosure and then install the new drive.
For macOS, I would use Carbon Copy Cloner. What's the equivalent for Windows?
The sunset sky is getting hazy. At least I don't smell the volcano. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1613746046651498497

Hi everybody, I’m ready to unveil my year-end-holiday-hack project:
Meet Searchtodon: ***Private*** Timeline Search for Mastodon
It fills a gap that I have been missing over on Twitter as well: “I remember seeing this THING, where was that again?”
It is built with privacy and consent in mind (pls see the FAQ), but is also *an experiment* to see if something like this is accepted by the larger Mastodon community.
Here goes: https://searchtodon.social
if you're wondering how he learned it, this was the chain of events:
1. when the dogs barked, my mom would yell "shut up!" and whack them with a slipper
2. the parrot, having little concept of slipper-based violence, believed that "shut up" is what made the dogs quiet
3. one day when the dogs barked, the parrot said "shut up" and the dogs, expecting slipper-based violence, stopped barking
4. parrot gradually applied this concept onto other annoying noises, such as my mom being on the phone, to similar effect
The reactions to ChatGPT in education, both at the K-12 and Higher Ed level really remind me of some prior technology wars going back to...
Calculator bans (students will forget or not learn how to add and subtract)
Graphic calculator bans (students will store formulas and forget critical math formulas)
Word processor/typed paper bans (students will forget how to write in cursive and how to spell and do grammar)
Laptop bans (students will just cheat and Google everything)
Wikipedia use ban (students will use unreliable and entirely too easy to access information)
I know ChatGPT is "different" from these, but it's also the same.
What other "tech innovations" fall under this history?
