Mastodon seems to have a whole lot less drama and very thoughtful users.

The ostensible promise of technology is that it would liberate humanity from the drudgery of menial work, enabling us to engage with more meaningful and creative pursuits.

Instead, we have frenzied development of ML systems to centralize and replace writing, art and other meaningful creative pursuits, giving us more time for menial work.

This seems pretty contrary to any useful definition of progress.

President Biden will call for quadrupling the tax on stock buybacks in tonight's State of the Union.

Since the Reagan era, corporations have spent more and more of their income on buybacks — which enrich executives — instead of increasing workers' wages.

We are looking for some technical product managers and product owners interested in public interest cybersecurity. DM me up for more info. Thanks! phil

What would you say is your personal #1 perk of working remotely?

I am looking for non-male (female, non-binary, etc) software engineers who would be willing to record a short (30-seconds) video about why ethics is important in their professional practice. It's for our first-year Computer Science students. If you would like to help, get in touch with me here. Thank you! :)

I know that there's been intermittent stability issues with mastodon.social and mastodon.online recently. We're working on improving our infrastructure to address this.

Anyone has a good suggestion for a text-based primer how to design PCBs for SMT? Assume the following:

- Electronics beginner, I designed a pair of simple PCBs that worked fine
- All I know about surface mount is that it exists. I don't know what I don't know
- I just installed a pair of SMT components with paste + hot air once, this stuff is hard lol
- JLCPCB would build and assemble all the stuff for me, anything they can't provide would be THT
- Making audio / synthesizer stuff, possibly with MCU
- I use Kicad but can easily follow instructions written for other software
- Focus on up-to-date best practices preferred, lots of old info has become less relevant as fab capabilities improved
- Video is difficult to use for me (impossible if not subtitled), text is hugely preferred

The new updates are now in the App Store!

Sadly, as I previously announced, I finally had to retire the old server API for very old versions of the app to perform some necessary upgrades. Only iOS 15+ is supported now.

For the 0.7% of you who are still using iOS 14, good news: your device is compatible with iOS 15!

For the 0.3% of you on iOS 12: sorry, it's the end of the line for Overcast on those devices. I held out as long as I could.

You've probably heard about the Ohio train derailment and fire by now.

My son was one of the firefighters called in. He spent close to seven hours on scene before even they had to evacuate by EPA order. Vinyl chloride stinks to high heaven, omg. His gear and personal vehicle reek something awful.

He's home and safe but on call to return. They had to abandon the tanker truck in the hot zone because it froze up and had engine trouble. He took the pic below as they left her in place by the tracks. They're hoping the truck isn't a total loss as it's our little town's only tanker.🤞 Everyone is exceptionally grateful there was only property loss though.

As first scenes go, my boy got a doozy, wow.

If you are #Korean and are reading this I urgently need to buy 완장 and 조의금 flair a funeral on Sunday and I have no idea how to find them in Chicago or to have them shipped here in time. It’s incredibly important, to honor a very notable martial artist who has no Korean family here properly. I am humbled and grateful for any help at all.

@Em0nM4stodon Can we remind people that it is not OK to share my contact info with WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok or anyone else? Sharing your address book with apps puts my privacy and possibly safety at risk. Just say no.

NASA is hiring a Chief Data Officer. I'll bet a few of you know someone who absolutely needs to know about this opportunity: usajobs.gov/job/700799600

This was very eloquently written. I never really thought of retro / old hardware as tools of the past, frozen in time, never to be modified by updates or connected services.

Looking for the best handheld logic analyzer. Any suggestions?
