I had an interesting conversation with a developer friend of mine about the importance of paying attention to error messages.

This is one of those things I don't ever remember being taught, but he (and I) have spent a lot of effort tutoring other people on this principle.

Except in extremely rare cases, any error condition is some other part of the system telling you that you're doing something wrong, and you should pay attention.

Compiler warnings, server logs, whatever - listen to them.

ChatGPT

Yesterday, I had a debugging session with my colleague. A specific code block looks suspiciously to me. Her comment: "That could not be the root cause because ChatGPT generates it" At the end, it was the reason 🤷‍♀️

My current conclusion: ChatGPT is the new Stack Overflow.

What if we called code-generating LLM’s “technical debt hallucinators”

I signed up for Mastodon in November of 2022 at a time when my cat was dying and I honestly just needed a little bit of an escape.

I thought I’d write some dumb jokes in order to keep the mood light, but what I ended up finding were some great people whom I never would have known existed if it weren’t for Mastodon.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the friends I’ve made on here in such a short time, and I look forward to meeting even more wonderful people on here in the future!

GM kills more than CarPlay support, it kills choice. "Software-driven vehicles should be about choice. Instead, GM is making a short-sighted decision based on a trickle of revenue under the guise of better integration. Owning all the data that a vehicle generates while driving around could be a great source of cash. The problem is potential customers have become accustomed to choosing which device they use to navigate, chat, text, and rock out within their vehicle. They’ve grown weary of being mined for data at the expense of their choice and they’re really not all that keen on in-car subscription services." arstechnica.com/?post_type=pos

While talking to a journalist about #LightPollution tonight, I showed this fantastic drone shot by Dwaine Eddie McGriff & Ben Tankersley.

It shows the impact of a single streetlight on a soybean field - check out the shadow of the pole!

So looking at this, can you guess why farmers COMPLAIN about the impact of these lights? (1/)

Sometimes you have one of those days that just shows how incompetent you are…

We have a brand new family car (replacing one that was twenty years old - just to clarify that this is not something very common in our family). The wife is taking it up the mountain for some late spring skiing, so even though the season is pretty much over, it wants proper traction tires.

No problem. I’ve done this before, even if it’s been a few years. Order tires from Costco (they aren’t in stock, since what idiot would install traction tires in March?), and have them install them.

They call back half an hour after I’ve dropped the car off, because the new car has locking lug nuts. I’ve never heard of such a thing, didn’t know my car had them, and have absolutely no idea what a lug nut key is, much less where it would be.

So I go back to the tire center, google what said “key” is even supposed to look like, and try to find it, eventually just give up and say “let’s reschedule”.

In their defense, the tire techs keep a straight face, and don’t laugh in my face for never even having realized that my car has such things.

As I drive away, I light goes on. I have a manual. It tells me exactly where said lug nut key is (It’s under the carpet in the frunk, in case anybody wonders).

I drive back, feeling really stupid. But at least the car is ready for skiing now.

Moral of the day: RTFM.

The Computer Science department at Louisiana State University (LSU) is currently hiring for many faculty positions related to applied cyber security. Courses taught inside this department include reverse engineering, malware analysis, binary exploitation, memory forensics and other intensive courses related to incident response and offensive security.

Ideal candidates will have significant experience with deeply

technical areas of cybersecurity. LSU was recently granted the CAE-CO designation and is one of only 21 schools nation-wide to hold it as it is the most technical designation granted by NSA and DHS. The department also runs a large SFS program for cyber security students.

If you are interested in one of these positions, then please see the

following link. I also ask my industry contacts to please spread the

word within academic communities that you have access to:

lsu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-U

The cybersecurity effort at LSU has strong support from the highest levels of the school and is rapidly expanding – so now is the perfect time to join.

PS: I am not employed by LSU, but do work very closely with the CS department to ensure the courses are relevant to industry and rigorous enough for students to leave with real-world, hands-on experience. If you have questions related to the position, then please direct them to Dr. Golden Richard at LSU: cct.lsu.edu/~golden/

Fediverse, I need your help!

I am switching computers, and I lost the #setup program for #Cubase LE 7, which is still my main #composition tool. I have a serial for it, but I cant find the archive anywhere. Would you have any ideas where to find it?

I need it to set it up on my new computer, so I can (at last!) apply a Cubase LE 12 upgrade!

Thanks for any help!
