We’re less than 3,000 signatures away from our goal, but we need your support to cross the finish line. Take a stand and demand that we end this horrific treatment of migrants at the Texas border.

Dear followers here on mastodon, ever since MurX took over, I've regarded mstdn as my home base. But I've posted 'over there' in parallel because too many important actors still refuse to be here. And in my field, with my objective of contributing mainly original content, being part of a much larger conversation that might change the debate in climate science and social ecology amid all the backlash remains important.

But I am done, and this is what I posted there.
A thread 🧵.

Deleted the previous version of this as it once again showed up as a reply to someone else.

@mcc this exists! Took me a while to find it, but I did- MIT Media Labs had a project called “Junkyard Jumbotron” github.com/mitmedialab/Junkyar
You take a bunch of phones, tablets and other screens, have them all arranged on a wall or flat surface. Each gets assigned a unique QR code, then you take a photo of the resulting assembly of screens, and upload it to the display URL. The project code then ID’s where each screen is located, and runs an image transform to show the appropriate portion of the source image onto the resulting aggregate display.
Was way fun when I tried it years ago. Try it!

So I’m looking for new embedded software/firmware clients. Preferably part-time contract, closed ended if possible. I’m a generalist so I can contribute to lots of projects of different configurations from low level device work up to (prototype) mobile app work. If you’re looking for help or know of leads I’m reachable here or at “chris at logicalelegance.com”. #embedded #jobsearch

I'm looking for more people in the human-computer interaction (#HCI) field to follow here ... if you are out there?

Please do comment and boost if you are one of them. Feel free to do so even if we are already following each other, other people might benefit from it.

Thanks!

This needs to be boosted far and wide as a template other news organizations can follow. 6 hours ago they posted “hello world” and now the local feed for the #BBC mastodon server has postings from some of their shows. Stop on by their local feed and favorite, boost or just say Hi. social.bbc/public/local Thanks to @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRD @BBCRadio4 @lisamelton @jeff fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/

Goodbye to my dear longtime friend, Paul Reubens. I am crushed. The world has lost one of the funniest human beings who ever lived. Paul, I hope wherever you are, you have reunited with John and Phil and are laughing your asses off - together again. I love you so much Paul. I will miss you and all the wonderful times we spent together more than you’ll ever know. 💔RIP

#introduction: I'm a cybersecurity researcher and educator. I founded a school to lower the barrier to access tech knowledge! https://taggartinstitute.org.

Also I stream and make YouTube videos, but right now I'm on hiatus as I take care of my new little girl!

I saw this advert from 1956 on Instagram and can’t work out how a fridge from nearly 70 years ago basically has better features than the fridge I own now.

Big Cat, hearing the ice cracking, takes the jump. And wow.

In September 2020 I started what became a long #Twitter thread on #Multilingualism and #MultilingualResearch.

Starting today, I'm stopping it on Twitter and continuing it on #Mastodon.

Here's a rollup of the Twitter thread.

When you listen to The Verge's podcast and they're legitimately saying Mastodon is a "no girls allowed" club? And we don't want Facebook here because Instagram will bring women here?!

What the fuck is wrong with these American tech pundits? Mastodon is the gayest, transest, most feminine social network I've ever seen. There are so many more outspoken, smart, odd, and downright weird women here than I've ever seen on any other social network. It's fucking great.

I was late jumping ship and all the :twitter: delete services no longer work since API access is paywalled so I wrote a very rudimentary browser script to crawl my feed and delete all my shit.

The engineers who designed the #Voyager probes half a century ago even thought of the possibility that a wrong sequence of commands may point the antenna dish away from earth.

And they implemented a self-adjusting mechanism that a few times a year scans the positions of a few known stars to infer the position of the earth, and point back the antenna in the right direction.

50 years later, these wonderful machines are still working, tens of billions of km away from earth, and even a wrong sequence of commands won't put them out of use.

The more I understand how they were designed, the more I feel like an early Medieval engineer looking at the Pantheon or other marvels or Roman architecture. Some amazing skills, knowledge and attention to details have been lost from that generation to ours.
