There’s a lot of news dropping today, so I didn’t want this one to slip by unnoticed. Scott Perry is the chair of the House Freedom Caucus. He may also have committed crimes of conspiracy around Jan 6, based on inadvertently posted texts and emails. open.substack.com/pub/statusku

Duke University Libraries are canceling their subscription to Basecamp. Their post explaining the move is very good, and worth your time: blogs.library.duke.edu/blog/20

Three words: tax the rich.

We need to hold our media to account. They are in large part responsible for the mess we are in.

Sen. John Glen raised the spectre of GPS attacks back in 1998 in a question to @spacerog during the @L0phtHeavyInd Senate testimony. The vulnerabilities aren't new, just the attacks. It's the story of cybersecurity. vice.com/en/article/m7bk3v/com

How's this for a conundrum? You spend several months of your life trying to uncover the real-life identity of perhaps one of the older and most experienced ransomware access brokers out there. And when you do find this person, you discover they are now (also?) serving in a very important technical role for the Ukrainian military that involves successfully targeting and killing large numbers of Russian invaders.

I'm not sure the timing is right for this person's story, but it's a good one.

Watching a mutual ask for printer recs and receive a chorus of tired tech folk going "Just get a Brother, they're fine" and man

MAN

Like this is actually kinda fascinating honestly, Brother is now the best printer brand, the one that every Computer Person recommends, and is it because their printers are good? Their printers are fine, they print, whatever, no, it's because everybody else's printers have gotten Innovated out the wazoo, every innovation making them way worse, until it's gotten to the point where I wouldn't have one in the house even if it were free, and meanwhile Brother's have remained consistently Fine I Guess, which now makes them the best printer manufacturer simply by virtue of them opting out of the Who Can Get Crappiest Fastest race

Brother have gotten to where they are now, by NOT innovating

I don’t need “ai” in my terminal, I’m perfectly capable of typing something that looks plausible but does something completely unexpected myself thanks
