Microsoft Authenticator saves the day. I was in the grocery store when I got the notification on my phone that someone was trying to sign in on a new device. I could tap Approve or Deny. Since I wasn’t trying to log into anything, I tapped Deny. I saw it again a couple of minutes later, and tapped Deny again.

When I got home, I opened the app to see the details (see picture). Someone in China typed the wrong password, then tried to authenticate using another method, which triggered 2FA in my Authenticator app. They actually tried four consecutive times. My phone was on silent and I only saw two of the attempts. The other attempts just timed out with no response.

BTW, the Microsoft Authenticator app doesn’t allow screenshots, so I used my wife’s phone to take a picture of the screen to show you.

Use 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) on every account that allows it. Don’t put it off any longer. Use this weekend to secure all your accounts, and start 2024 with better security.
