The Apple and iOS community lost one of the truly good ones recently.

Alex Hay, the developer of Toolbox Pro for Shortcuts, passed away last Saturday after a battle with cancer. He was 36.

The news left me devastated. With his family's blessing, we've decided to dedicate @AutomationApril to his memory. We'll be making donations to two cancer charities in his name; we encourage those who were fans of his work to do the same.

Alex was pure talent. We'll miss you.

I'm new here on zirk.us, having just migrated (very clumsily) from mastodon.online. So, I thought it would be nice to introduce myself again here.

I'm a poet, parent, I work part time in the humanitarian field, I was an actress & I love art, music, dance, film & theatre. I'm very concerned about the climate, womens' reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, migrant & refugee issues, human rights, AI & tech ethics, racism & ableism, & the state of our democracies. I may post a lot of poetry. Hi!

It's #introduction time!

Hello, Fediverse! I'm Liv. I'm a creative technologist and tech policy advocate focused on the immersive web and spatial computing.

I work at Mozilla, where I'm the Director of the Mozilla Hubs team, an #opensource social virtual world platform that aims to make #metaverse technology available to all in a safe, healthy, and dynamic way.

I'm also a student at Columbia Business School, where I'm studying for my #MBA and chair the Student Leadership & Ethics Board.

Well. The time has come, and I am looking for a job.

I am a full stack developer with five years experience, and additional seven years experience with PLSQL and large scale data integrations.

I’m down with #angular, #react, #dotnet, #sql. I learn new languages quickly, like working directly with customers, and have spent all five of my years building apps for Master Data Management teams.

Please boost! #FediHired

I suppose a new #introduction is in order.
I'm Mike Karliner, I've been programming since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

OK, not quite, only mid 70's,but still.

Claim to fame, first CTO of #shazam but I've done a bunch of stuff before and since.
Managed a bunch, but prefer to make things, software, hardware, bread, etc.

We need a few more followers over here on Mastodon or it's going to be hard to argue against going back to the bird site. Can you help by boosting us to your friends and recommending that they might want to check out the fiercest little (aboveground) conservation group working in the western US?

Do you still use Twitter now that you're on Mastodon?

Please BOOST for maximum exposure to the #Fediverse

Feel free to comment with how and how much you currently use Twitter or why you no longer use Twitter.

1. @RonDeSantisFL@twitter.com has declared war on drag shows.

He is pushing to shut down venues that host drag shows, claiming they are endangering kids

But the DeSantis admin was just CAUGHT RED HANDED fabricating claims about the shows

Researchers estimate that if the top 1% of Americans paid the full amount of taxes they owed, it would raise $175 billion a year.

That’s just UNPAID taxes. Not new or higher taxes.

How about we make them pay their fair share and use the money to invest in the American people?

Folks, when they roll back voting rights, try to ban books, invade privacy, attack bodily autonomy, and crow about critical race theory, it's because they've run out of ideas to hold onto power.

...and this is my cheapy "documentary" of the Hawaiian monk seal baby, Koalani's first 41 days. #InternationalDayOfTheSeal! 🦭

In a world where developers can get a lot of help from Copilot, ChatGPT, StackOverflow, etc., there are still certain coding skills that characterize the best software developers. As just one example, real developers use data types in a way that makes their code cleaner and more reliable -- they define types like "heightInCm" or "widthInPixels" instead of floats and ints, and suddenly code is 10x easier to reason about.

In your opinion, what are some other hallmarks of top 1% developers?

Current #cawx status: 🌬️

Trees snapped in half. Ferry unable to dock and people getting seasick. Amtrak derailed. Big rig overturned on the Bay Bridge.

Effectively a baby hurricane. This video explainer is really good/scary: youtube.com/watch?v=F0Q30Huu8-

It's happening... More followers here on Mastodon than on Twitter. And y'all are much nicer here too.

We haven’t stopped since Saturday, when we filmed this, to get you our #FirstDrive report of the #NissanAriya_e4orce .

It’s packed with stuff! (And it’s like a more approachable BMW iX)

Watching heroic efforts from devs and qa on the death march to release...

Firstly, why do this to yourselves? Just stop adding new features and taking change requests a week before release. Focus on bugs and perf and compatibility instead, polish polish polish.

And secondly, how much of "hustle culture" is management celebrating the fact that eng has saved their asses from their poor job performance? Last minute heroic efforts to ship are a sign of management failure, not 'great hustle'.
