Question: What's CAA?

Answer: CAA is a type of DNS record that allows site owners to specify which CA's are allowed to issue certificates containing their domain names. It's crucial for managing the risk of external bugs from a CA's validation process.

PSA: lifetime America the Beautiful National Parks and Land passes are available for FREE to disabled citizens or permanent residents with a “permanent disability”.

While there are some hoops to jump through applying online, I inquired about it at a gate and they accepted my self-attestation.

All the parks rangers I have met have been extremely affirming and eager to share the most accessible, wonderful areas with me. Ymmv of course, but this is a win for disabled folks I wanna hype up.

The year is 3423. Storage is limited. Digital archivists convene to solve the pending crisis. However, they spend the entire conference arguing to keep 4.5 exbibytes of __MACOSX directories.

One of the supposed “advantages” of async work has been that you can start working on something without needing others to be available.
Reasonable leverage point, but wrong direction.

Being able to start the work without others (that are needed in the process) means that the cost of starting new work goes to zero.

That tilts the system towards a higher arrival rate – the amount of work being pulled into the system of work – and that means the work in process and inventory shoots up.

One of the decisive moments in my understanding of #LLMs and their limitations was when, last autumn, @emilymbender walked me through her Thai Library thought experiment.

She's now written it up as a Medium post, and you can read it here. The value comes from really pondering the question she poses, so take the time to think about it. What would YOU do in the situation she outlines?

PSA: take some time in 2023 to back up your/your family's CD-Rs (and other recordable media) full of memories you threw into storage 10+ years ago; there's a decent chance they've started to rot!

the tenuously thin layer of dyes/adhesives holding the data *will* break down over time, rapidly so if their environment is uncontrolled, the surface was previously nicked/contaminated, or they were cheap ones to begin with
