When I started on Mastodon, people would advise me to “only Boost posts.” Since there’s no algorithm that places a value on Favorites, “only Boosts have value.”

I disagree completely.

When people Favorite my posts, they unwittingly introduce themselves to me. I have discovered some very interesting people that I may not have if they didn’t Favorite my posts.

Keep ‘em coming. It’s nice to meet you.

Please don’t click the stupid AI-written Gizmodo / io9 post — not even for LOLs.

James Whitbrook, io9’s top editor, was almost completely blindsided by the story, which — spoiler alert — claimed to be a chronological list of Star Wars films but was not even in chronological order.

When CNET pulled this crap, its entire newsroom unionized. io9 owner G/O Media is already unionized, though — and its union is asking that you don’t click the story, or any other story with a byline ending in “Bot”.

Over the last few months, I’ve seen a few articles explaining why Mastodon has failed. I’ve also seen several articles talking about the most recent spike of new Mastodon users.

So is it failing because there are too many users?

It must be really strange to be a kid learning about the Civil Rights movement and see America doing the same thing to trans people but your teachers just ignore the connection in classes.

#OTD in 1687, Sir Isaac Newton published his magnum opus, the Principia — one of the most important works in the history of science.

It was in the Principia, or the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, that Newton first set out in mathematical terms the principles of force, time and motion, and revolutionized methods of scientific investigation. via @iaeaorg

Principia mathematica (3 vols) by Alfred North Whitehead & Bertrand Russell is being proofed by @DProofreaders.

Hi folks! This is tough to post. I was laid off just shy of 18 weeks ago. The lack of movement on that front is shockingly bad. Zero response to many scores of applications, and only 3 companies I had interviews with, which were direct referrals. Looking for things in anti-fraud/trust & safety space, as well as what I have always done well- deep customer support, things I've done for 25ish years. My LinkedIn URL is in bio, if you have direct leads you can refer me to, I would be so grateful.

I guess the plausible counter argument is, "that's because it's all old people who are computer geeks!" and you know what? I'm ok with that. As long as we are federated with many other types of groups, too. That's the point.

People say "decentralization doesn't work as good as the facebooks and the twitters", but then I post here on highly decentralized Mastodon a silly little joke about the commando character in the old video game Command & Conquer from 1995 and get a response from someone who worked on the original game! .. uh, maybe it is working already? infosec.exchange/@codinghorror

Meta’s new app “Threads” is up pre-order in the App Store. Let’s do a quick check on what data they want from you compared to the official Mastodon app, Mammoth and Ivory.

Spoiler: Meta wants to know and track everything about you, and Mastodon doesn’t want anything.
